On behalf of our client, we are recruiting for an experienced Heavy Plant Mechanic for long-term/ongoing work on a major project in Leiston, Suffolk.

Duties Include

We are seeking an experienced and reliable Heavy Plant Mechanic to inspect, maintain, diagnose and repair a wide range of heavy plant machinery.

The successful candidate will have strong fault-finding abilities, excellent technical knowledge, and the ability to work independently or as part of a wider maintenance team.

This role is critical in ensuring machinery remains safe, compliant, and fully operational to support site operations and productivity.

Responsibilities include

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on heavy plant equipment.
  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical faults.
  • Conducting inspections to identify wear, damage and potential failures.
  • Carrying out repairs and component replacements to minimise equipment downtime.
  • Maintaining accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and service documentation.
  • Ensuring all equipment is maintained in accordance with manufacturer specifications and statutory requirements.
  • Reporting defects and safety concerns immediately to the relevant personnel.
  • Supporting breakdown response activities and emergency repairs when required.
  • Working closely with operations and site teams to maximise plant availability.
  • Ensuring compliance with company procedures and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Pay Details

  • Fully PAYE
  • 50–80 hour weeks available
  • 12 on, 2 off rotation
  • 12-hour shifts typical
  • Basic: £24.14 per hour
  • 1.5x Overtime: £36.21 per hour
  • 2x Overtime: £48.28 per hour
  • Lodge paid per shift worked

Estimated Gross Earnings

  • 5 Days: £1,593+ including lodge
  • 7 Days: £3178+ including lodge
  • (Exact earnings dependent on hours worked and shift pattern.)

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance, Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years' post-apprenticeship experience maintaining and repairing heavy plant machinery.
  • Strong diagnostic and fault-finding experience.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical and basic electrical systems.
  • Experience working with construction plant and heavy equipment.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Ability to work safely in a fast-paced operational environment.

Desirable

  • CITB Plant Maintenance qualification.
  • IOSH Working Safely.
  • CPCS Plant Maintenance Qualification.
  • IPAF.
  • Previous experience working on major infrastructure, construction, energy or nuclear projects.
  • Manufacturer training on JCB, CAT, Hitachi, Volvo, Komatsu or similar equipment.
