We’re looking for an experienced SHEQ Compliance Officer to help maintain high standards of safety, environmental responsibility and quality across our project sites. This is a varied, hands-on role involving travel to different locations to carry out independent audits and inspections. You’ll work closely with site teams, contractors and management, identifying risks and areas for improvement while helping the business meet its legal, regulatory and ISO obligations. The role would suit someone with a practical approach to compliance who can engage confidently with people at every level. You’ll need to be thorough and independent, but also constructive—helping teams understand what needs to improve and supporting them in putting it right.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out planned and ad-hoc audits across project sites
- Conducting site inspections against ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards
- Identifying hazards, non-conformances and opportunities for improvement
- Recommending corrective and preventive actions and monitoring them through to completion
- Conducting gap analyses to assess SHEQ performance
- Ensuring contractors and subcontractors meet required SHEQ standards
- Auditing compliance with the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and other relevant regulations
- Checking that risk assessments, method statements and permits are being implemented correctly
- Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses, including ensuring appropriate root-cause analysis is completed
- Assessing emergency response arrangements, including fire safety and first-aid provision
- Reviewing compliance with environmental legislation, including the Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Auditing waste management, pollution prevention and carbon-reduction measures
- Checking adherence to site procedures and the company’s ISO 9001 Quality Management System
- Monitoring supplier and contractor quality performance
- Preparing clear audit reports covering findings, risks and recommendations
- Tracking non-conformance reports and ensuring follow-up actions are completed
- Analysing trends and providing practical, data-led insight to improve SHEQ performance
- Supporting the SHEQ Compliance Manager with updates to policies, procedures and training programmes
You will need:
- A NEBOSH Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety
- Internal auditor certification for ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001
- At least two years’ experience in SHEQ auditing within the utilities, construction or infrastructure sector
- Strong knowledge of UK SHEQ legislation, regulations and industry best practice
- A detailed and analytical approach to inspections and audits
- The ability to interpret regulations and apply them sensibly in a working environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Confidence engaging with site teams, contractors and management
- Good report-writing and data-analysis skills
- The organisation and flexibility to manage multiple audits across different locations
You’ll play an important part in ensuring planned audits and inspections are completed, non-conformances are resolved promptly and SHEQ performance continues to improve. Your work will help reduce incidents, near misses, quality defects and rework while maintaining compliance with ISO and environmental requirements.
