This role focuses on improving existing mobile screeners through practical, engineering-led design optimisation, while also contributing to new product development from the earliest stages. You will work on machines that are already operating in the field, identifying and delivering improvements to performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost. Proven improvements are then embedded early into new product concepts and platform developments, ensuring future machines benefit from real-world learning. The role combines structured product improvement projects, hands-on design engineering, and early-phase NPPD involvement, offering continued exposure to creative design work while delivering tangible product enhancements. The role is well suited to a Design Engineer who enjoys improving mature products, or a Manufacturing / Operations Engineer looking to move into a more design-focused role while applying strong build, quality, and process knowledge.
Responsibilities
- Analyse field performance, warranty data, build issues, and cost drivers on current mobile screening machines.
- Redesign components and assemblies to simplify build and assembly, improve manufacturability and serviceability, increase reliability and durability, and reduce unnecessary complexity.
- Apply DFM/DFA principles to improve existing machines and influence future product architectures.
- Collaborate with manufacturing, supply chain, and suppliers to convert improvement ideas into robust, production-ready designs.
- Support prototype builds, trials, and validation activities on live machines.
- Own engineering changes through design release and introduction into production.
- Contribute to new product development by embedding learning from existing platforms into early concept decisions, system layouts, and design standards.
Qualifications / Education
- Degree (or equivalent experience) in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related discipline.
Experience Level
- Experience working in design engineering, manufacturing engineering, or product development environments.
- Demonstrated experience improving existing products through redesign, simplification, or engineering optimisation.
- Practical understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes, including tolerances and production constraints.
- Experience applying DFM/DFA principles to influence design decisions on current products or during early development phases.
- Experience using 3D CAD and engineering design tools, or a strong interest in developing advanced design and digital validation skills.
- Exposure to new product development activities, with an interest in influencing designs from early concept through to production.
- Experience with mobile machinery, heavy equipment, hydraulics, or structural assemblies is beneficial, but not essential.
We value engineers who can think critically, challenge existing designs, and translate practical insight into robust engineering solutions.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals, with the ability to translate real-world issues into practical design solutions.
- Confidence working with complex mechanical assemblies and understanding how design decisions affect build, service, and long-term reliability.
- Ability to balance detail-focused design work with higher-level system thinking, particularly when influencing early product concepts.
- Evidence-based problem-solving approach, using data from field performance, build experience, or testing to guide decisions.
- Ability to work effectively across design, manufacturing, supply chain, and supplier teams.
- Comfortable taking ownership of engineering problems and driving them through to resolution.
- Pragmatic, hands-on mindset with a strong interest in seeing designs built, tested, and operating in the field.
- Clear and effective communicator, able to explain technical decisions and trade-offs without unnecessary jargon.
- Curious and improvement-driven, motivated to embed learning into both current products and future designs.
The above description is non-exhaustive and there may be additional duties in accordance with the role. All applicants must demonstrate through their application form, how they meet the criteria for the position applied for. Terex is an equal opportunity employer and appointments are based on merit. We value diversity and welcome applications from all sections of our community.
