We are recruiting two Senior Advisers. The first will lead the LGA's work on devolution, public service reform and local growth. The second will lead local democracy initiatives, including elections, councillor standards, abuse in public life and other related areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and collaborate with a team to achieve LGA business objectives and respond to new or changing requirements.
  • Commission, undertake research, horizon scanning and intelligence gathering to establish a strong evidence base and inform the policy agenda.
  • Prepare reports, policy papers and briefings for LGA members and managers on sensitive and complex issues; contribute to external briefings, publicity and marketing materials on behalf of the LGA.
  • Lead the delivery of assigned projects and programmes within resource and budget allocations to meet the LGA's business plan and help councils address priority outcomes.
  • Develop networks and partnerships that add value to the LGA and maintain a positive reputation with local authorities, central government, partners and stakeholders.
  • Represent the LGA with local government members, government officials, ministers, parliamentarians and other interested parties at national (and European, if necessary) level to promote the LGA's reputation, influence the policy agenda and achieve beneficial outcomes for councils.

Role Profile

You will have the knowledge, experience and gravitas to engage at a senior level with government and organisations from across the public, private and voluntary sectors. You will have a strategic, forward‑looking approach, strong political awareness, programme management and delivery skills, and the confidence to lead programmes across a policy portfolio. You will be an excellent communicator, problem‑solver and team leader with experience in self‑directed research, independent work and use of communication tools, including social media, in politically sensitive environments.

Requirements

Must have the right to work in the UK (the LGA cannot offer sponsorship visas). Evidence for the right to work will be requested at the interview stage.

Location and Working Arrangements

Office‑based staff are required to work in the LGA's London office at least two days per week, subject to business need. Home‑based staff will be expected to travel occasionally to London and wider afield as required.

Benefits

Annual leave entitlement: 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years’ service and 33 days after five years, plus all UK public holidays (pro rata for fixed‑term and part‑time contracts).
