About us

The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government. We are a politically led, cross‑party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems. We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector. We value diversity and encourage applications from all sections of the community to this high‑profile role.

About the role

The LGA pension team works with and on behalf of administering authorities of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) in England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. As part of the team, you will play an important role in the legislative and administrative framework of the largest funded pension scheme in the UK. We are looking for a high performing individual to work as part of the LGPS Training and Development Team. The successful candidate will develop, coordinate and deliver high quality training to pension administrators, scheme employers, councillors and local pension board members both in person and virtually. You will also assist in the delivery of an LGPS specific qualification. This will include writing course material and assessments, invigilating examinations, organising and delivering tutorials and liaising with the students.

The position is required to support immediate delivery needs. The organisation is consulting on its operating model. The grade and responsibilities are subject to confirmation. Priority consideration may be given to employees at risk where they have the required qualifications and experience.

We encourage flexible working at the LGA. This post is offered as a home or office based (Westminster) contract.

Job Description

You will have excellent knowledge of the LGPS and be comfortable interpreting and explaining complex legislation to a range of stakeholders. Experience of delivering training using a variety of formats and creating written training materials, ideally in a pension setting, is essential. You will also have excellent IT skills and experience of organising and running events. You will be able to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision using your own initiative. We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is willing to challenge the status quo. The job will involve attending events and other meetings across the UK and outside normal office hours. A flexible attitude to working hours and working away from the office and/or home is essential. You must have the right to work in the UK; the LGA is unfortunately unable to offer sponsorship visas. Evidence for the right to work in the UK will be requested at the interview stage.

Our benefits

  • LGA annual leave entitlement is 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years’ service and to 33 days after five years’ service, plus all UK public holidays (pro‑rated for fixed term and part‑time contracts).

  • Future development – face‑to‑face and virtual courses are scheduled in line with developmental goals.
  • The LGA offers 24/7 access to a free, confidential employee assistance programme managed by Health Assured. This service is also available for dependants.
