Please note: Office-based staff are required to work in the LGA’s London office two days per week as a minimum, subject to business need. For home-based staff, some occasional travel to London and wider afield is likely required.

The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the LGA’s Leadership team to design and deliver new resilience (major incidents) training for local authorities in England.

This is a strategically significant training programme, which has arisen from one of the Grenfell Inquiry’s recommendations.

You will be the lead for this new grant-funded project from MHCLG to lead and manage the training offer through design work and close collaboration with front line officers, chief executives, the voluntary sector, delivery partners, and government officials.

You will manage procurement and contracts with delivery partners, communicating and engaging the local government sector in the new training offer, ensuring there is a rigorous evaluation of impacts and a culture of continuous learning embedded, as well as performance reporting to MHCLG.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver LGA leadership programmes and ensure that projects are delivered on time, within budget and in line with quality standards.

  • Support the commissioning of external suppliers/agencies to ensure the appropriate level of support and capacity to deliver services on time, within budget and to meet quality standards.

  • Liaise with designated organisations and agencies in order to contribute to improvements and promote political and managerial leadership programmes; undertake research and gather intelligence to contribute to the continuous improvement of the LGA’s leadership programmes and share findings across the LGA.

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local government organisations including locally elected individuals, in order to understand priorities and needs, develop policy and share good practice.

  • Prepare reports and briefings to support and promote the LGA’s leadership programmes and brief internal and external contacts on policy and/or technical issues in order to influence opinion and stimulate debate.

  • Ensure that the LGA’s leadership programmes support and inform improvement across the range of local government organisation services in line with the LGA’s priorities.

  • To maintain an active network with the local government resilience community and act as a key source of expertise relating to resilience legislation and its implications for local government.
