About us

The Local Government Association (LGA) is the national membership body for local authorities. We work on behalf of our member councils to support, promote and improve local government.

We are a politically led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils to help them deliver local solutions to national problems.

We also provide councils with the tools and resources to respond to challenges present and emerging, and support improvement across the sector.

About the role

We are looking for a Regional Adviser to work across the West Midlands. This is a great opportunity for someone keen to be at the heart of the LGA’s improvement activity, working closely with councils. Candidates will be passionate and knowledgeable about local government and want to be personally involved in supporting improvement in councils at a time of significant change, challenge and opportunity in the sector.

Working closely with the Principal Adviser and other regional colleagues, as Regional Adviser you will act as a key interface between the LGA and local authorities. You will need to be on the front foot, developing and maintaining relationships, partnerships and networks across the regions, and supporting the design and delivery of practical improvement support in councils.

About you

  • A broad understanding of local government and its challenges especially in the West Midlands region and of public service reform.

  • Experience of managing a complex workload, preparing plans and meeting deadlines and milestones.

  • Experience of successfully delivering multi-stage projects according to original objectives.

  • Experience of using project management approaches and principles across multiple projects.

  • Experience of a range of software packages including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email and the internet.

  • Experience of researching and analysing data, policy and performance information from a range of sources and of compiling clear, comprehensive papers.

  • Experience of organising meetings/events.

  • Experience of public speaking and/or giving presentations.

  • You will be able to hit the ground running, using your abilities and experience to effectively manage and maintain relationships with individual local authorities, networks and groupings of authorities and to ensure effective delivery of projects and programmes to support sector-led improvement.

  • The job will involve attending events and other meetings across the UK and outside normal office hours. A flexible attitude to working hours and working away from the office and/or home is essential.

  4. Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal with members, other clients and colleagues with courtesy, tact and sensitivity.

  5. A demonstrable commitment to customer care.

  6. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines, and a concern for order and accuracy.

  7. Excellent IT skills, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the ability quickly to learn new packages as required.

  8. Ability to work as part of a team and to support others.

  9. Flexible approach to work, with a keenness to adapt to meet changing work requirements.

  10. A positive, “can do” attitude and ability to take the initiative.

Our benefits

  • LGA annual leave entitlement is 29 days, rising to 31 days after three years’ service and to 33 days after five years’ service, plus all UK public holidays (pro rata for fixed term and part time contracts).

  • Flexible & agile working – office-based staff are required to work in the LGA’s London office two days per week as a minimum, subject to business need and this may vary.

  • Future development – face-to-face and virtual courses are scheduled in line with developmental goals.
