An established and highly respected specialist contractor is looking to appoint an Intermediate Technical Design Manager to join its team in Swindon. The business delivers a diverse range of specialist joinery, interior fit-out, construction and M&E projects, working with a broad client base across commercial, retail, hospitality, heritage and other specialist environments.

With a strong reputation for quality, technical expertise and delivering complex projects from design development through to completion, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Design Coordinator or Assistant/Intermediate Design Manager looking to take the next step in their career.

The successful candidate will become an important part of the technical team, taking responsibility for coordinating design information and supporting the successful delivery of projects from initial design development through to manufacture, installation and completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate technical design information across a range of projects.
  • Take responsibility for design development from concept through to construction and installation.
  • Coordinate architectural, structural, M&E, specialist joinery and subcontractor design information.
  • Review drawings, specifications, schedules and technical documentation to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Liaise with architects, consultants, clients, subcontractors, suppliers and internal project teams.
  • Identify and resolve technical issues, design clashes and buildability concerns at an early stage.
  • Coordinate design meetings and maintain clear records of actions, decisions and outstanding information.
  • Manage the design programme and ensure information is delivered in line with project requirements.
  • Review and coordinate technical submissions, samples, specifications and subcontractor proposals.
  • Work closely with estimating, commercial, manufacturing, contracts and site teams to ensure designs are practical, cost-effective and deliverable.
  • Provide technical input into procurement and construction activities.
  • Assist with value engineering and design optimisation where appropriate.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant Building Regulations, British Standards, statutory requirements and project specifications.
  • Maintain design registers, drawing schedules and other technical project documentation.
  • Support the resolution of technical queries throughout the construction and installation phases.
  • Ensure design changes are properly documented, communicated and incorporated into project information.
  • Assist with managing design risk and ensuring appropriate consideration is given to health and safety and CDM requirements.

The role will provide exposure to a varied portfolio of projects, including specialist joinery, commercial interior fit-outs, retail environments, airport projects, refurbishment, heritage restoration, new-build construction and building services.

About You

We are looking for a technically capable and commercially aware design professional who is ready to develop their career within a specialist contractor environment. You will ideally have:

  • Previous experience in technical design, design coordination or design management within construction, fit-out, joinery or a related sector.
  • A relevant qualification in construction, architecture, engineering, architectural technology or a similar discipline.
  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design information.
  • Good understanding of construction methods, materials and buildability.
  • Ability to interpret and interrogate technical drawings, specifications and design information.
  • Experience liaising with consultants, architects, subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage several projects or workstreams simultaneously.
  • Good understanding of current Building Regulations, relevant British Standards and construction industry requirements.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with commercial, manufacturing and site teams.
  • A practical mindset and the ability to turn design concepts into workable construction solutions.

Desirable Experience

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • Specialist joinery and bespoke manufacture.
  • Interior fit-out and refurbishment.
  • Retail or airport fit-out.
  • Heritage or conservation projects.
  • Design-and-build projects.
  • M&E coordination.
  • Bespoke architectural interiors.
  • Working within a contractor or specialist subcontractor environment.
  • BIM and digital design coordination.
  • AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks or similar design software.
  • Document control and common data environments.
