Household Waste Recycling Centre Operative – Part Time

Job Details

Salary £25,185 – £25,989 per annum / 24 hours per week / Permanent, Part time / Location: Burnley, Lancashire.

Working pattern: Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday – Weekend Enhancement.

Role Context

The HWRC Operative reports to the Assistant Operations Manager and works under day‑to‑day direction from the Site Supervisor and Operations Supervisors. The role is carried out almost entirely outdoors, involves comprehensive interaction with customers, waste handling and segregation, and requires operating mechanical plant.

Responsibilities

• Follow routine daily instructions to achieve service standards and performance expectations.
• Meet and greet customers, provide advice on use of the facility and where to deposit waste items.
• Assist customers with depositing their waste and lift heavy items into containers or up/down steps as necessary.
• Maximise the amount of waste separated for re‑use or recycling by retrieving and encouraging customers to use correct containers.
• Provide customers with information about re‑use and recycling, including what happens to the materials collected at the HWRC.
• Implement council HWRC policies through direct engagement with customers, including dealing with difficult situations.
• Process payments or charges for the delivery of specific wastes.
• Conduct practical activities to maintain the appearance of the HWRC, ensuring all working areas remain tidy and comply with quality, environmental and health & safety standards; operate specialist mechanical plant and compaction equipment.
• Assist in running re‑use shops and other re‑use activities.
• Support the Site Supervisor in the delivery of aspects of his or her role when absent.
• Work on Bank Holidays as standard or in rota, irrespective of whether they fall on a normal working day.
• Complete basic competency qualifications and training required for the role.
• Be trained to operate any mobile or mechanical plant associated with the role and operate that plant as a daily duty.
• Work at other operational facilities within a reasonable distance of the specified facility as required; expenses will be paid for travel where applicable.

Qualifications

• Demonstrate the capability to gain relevant certificates of basic competence for the delivery of site operations, including first aid and the use of mechanical plant.
