Archives Engagement Officer

This is a part-time post (14.8 hours per week across Thursdays and Fridays), temporary for 2 years, based at Burnley Library.

The successful candidate will very occasionally need to visit other venues in the Burnley area and Lancashire Archives and Local History in Preston.

They may also occasionally need to be available to work at Burnley Library on Saturday mornings when Burnley FC are playing at home and very occasionally to host events in the evenings on weekdays.

Our Service

Lancashire Archives and Local History cares for 900 years of the countys history. Millions of items are stored on 9 miles of shelving in the strongrooms in Preston. Our collections include everything from medieval parchments to digital sound recordings. We collect and preserve archives so that Lancashires stories will be told in the future and to ensure they are also available for everyone to use and enjoy today. We are an Accredited Archive Service and we are supported by an amazing team of volunteers and the Friends of Lancashire Archives.

Lancashire Archives forms part of Lancashire County Council\’s Cultural Services, which also includes the Lancashire Library Service, operating around the County and offering a range of services including access to local history collections maintained and accessed within library buildings.

Our Plan

Over the next 2 years we plan to continue to develop our offer at Burnley Library, in partnership with our Library colleagues, through our exciting Clarets Collected project. Funded by Friends organisation, this project started two years ago with the aim to bring together a fan-led Burnley Football Club archive collection at Burnley Library and develop associated events, exhibitions and a primary school session, as well as provide volunteering opportunities.

The collection itself has grown significantly over the last two years, and although there will be more work do on its development, the main focus for the successful candidate will be developing and delivering our primary school session and supporting our volunteer offer. Events and exhibitions will be worked on and delivered as and when resource allows.

The Role

The successfully candidate will:

  • Recruit and train volunteers, and plan, supervise and celebrate their successes
  • Deliver and further develop our existing school session.
  • Help develop catalogue lists and information about the Clarets Collection to make it more accessible and provide help and advice on a day-to-day basis to customers who are interested in it.
  • Provide reports to colleagues, project partners and supporters
  • Develop and deliver other engagement activities when resource allows.

About You

We are looking for someone who is passionate about working with people and sharing stories. You will have experience of working in the library, heritage or learning sectors, knowledge of best practice within heritage engagement and experience of working with a range of different audiences.

You will have experience of working with volunteers and collaborating with stakeholders to deliver projects and engagement programmes.

You will need to communicate effectively and work independently to lead delivery in delegated work areas.

A knowledge of and enthusiasm for the history of Burnley Football club would help the successful candidate deliver excellent customer service but is not essential.
