Apprenticeship Overview

  • Salary: £8.00 an hour. Automatic pay increase after one year on programme for 19+ year olds
  • Working Week: Monday 8:35am – 4:10pm, Tuesday 8:35am – 3:10pm, Wednesday 8:35am – 4:10pm, Thursday 8:35am – 3:10pm, Friday 8:35am – 3:10pm (30-minute lunch break)
  • Hours: 32.5 hours per week
  • Duration: 18 months

Responsibilities

  • Support the ethos of the school and work collaboratively with classroom teachers in the development and education of children, including those with special physical, emotional, and educational needs.
  • Attend and participate in regular class, department, and school meetings.
  • Maintain awareness of school policies and procedures and assist senior staff in implementing agreed programmes with individuals or groups; cover the class teacher for occasional short periods.
  • Work in class and unsupervised to deliver programmes of work to support individuals and small groups of learners.
  • Plan and contribute to the planning of work programmes, offering ideas, materials, and learning strategies for lessons.
  • Pastoral duties: assist with general care and welfare of learners, support independence, maintain a safe environment, monitor health and welfare, reinforce self-esteem, maintain school routines and conduct codes, assist with basic first aid, personal hygiene routines, administer medicines under appropriate supervision, supervise at start and end of the day.
  • Behaviour: provide pastoral support, monitor behaviour, identify and respond to unusual or challenging behaviour patterns, and recognise progress.
  • Recording and Assessment: monitor progress and needs of learners, manage assessment, evidence records, and file maintenance for designated learners.
  • Reporting: contribute to annual review and end-of-year reports.
  • Teaching and Learning: prepare and organise teaching resources, support learners, maintain classroom equipment and materials, foster intellectual and social development, promote pupil independence, support lunchtime clubs/activities, assist in resource manufacture, and support pool activities (if required).
  • Health and Safety: promote pupils’ safety and wellbeing, safeguard wellbeing by following KCSIE and child protection policy, look after upset or accident pupils, provide toileting and intimate care, manage risks, and support the school’s safeguarding procedures.
  • Safeguarding: work within statutory safeguarding guidance, collaborate with the designated safeguarding lead to promote best interests of pupils, share concerns when necessary.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs in English and Maths at grades 4–9 (A*–C) desirable.

Training and Qualification

The successful candidate will obtain a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship standard qualification. Each apprentice will have a dedicated tutor who will conduct monthly remote tutorials and reviews, providing continuous support throughout the program. Depending on the apprentice’s needs, the frequency of these sessions may vary.
