Be part of a team delivering the next generation of secure military communications satellites for the UK Ministry of Defence. This work provides resilient, high‑performance connectivity for the UK, its allies and Defence personnel worldwide, playing a critical role in protecting national security as space becomes more contested and demand for secure data continues to grow. Joining Lockheed Martin also means helping to shape significant investment in the North East space sector, with more than £100 million proposed to support high‑skill jobs, advanced manufacturing and long‑term economic growth.

The facilities engineer will be the central point of contact for the Space Team across the various facilities hence will have frequent inter-organisational and outside supplier contacts. The facilities engineer for Space will be part of a wider LMUK facilities team so will have contact with peers and leadership across this function with LMUK and LMUS.

The facilities engineer will represent the organisation in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects. The candidate will also be responsible for tracking and monitoring the various facility projects, ensuring progress through effective monitoring and controls and the provision of programme metrics for leadership.

The facilities engineer will have a clear understanding of what is expected and how they are then able to deliver their obligations to the team. Keeping track of deadlines and working independently as part of a diverse team to meet them will be key. The role will be expected to represent the business in a highly professional manner and contributes and effectively delivers the programme scope.

This is a key role within our team so the candidate will need to be focused on team goals and individual performance which contributes to the overall team success. Behaviours, collaboration and shared values are key to the success of the Space team in delivering end user capability to cost, schedule and performance.

Key tasks include:

  • Plans, designs and oversees the construction of new or expanded facilities, ranging from a complete new AI&T facility to refitting an existing laboratory to provide enhanced capability.
  • Prepares architectural, engineering, and cost estimates, functional studies, construction plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Recommends architectural and engineering design procedures and standards for the planning and design of facilities.
  • Documenting and recording the installation and commissioning of security attributes within the facility.
  • Supervises the detailed design, budgetary costing, standardized construction, and final inspection of facility projects.
  • Collate all necessary operating and maintenance documentation to support the handover to facilities maintenance teams.
  • Conducts construction surveillance to ensure adherence to contractual requirements.

Requirements include:

  • Prince 2/APM or a related technical qualification plus minimum 3 years of professional experience.
  • Facilities background ideally in a defence industry.
  • Good working knowledge of 2D and/or 3D C.A.D packages such as AutoCAD.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Project and the Microsoft office suite.
  • Knowledge and understanding of building regulations.
  • Knowledge and understanding of local authority planning regulations.
  • NEBOSH Level 2 Health and Safety at work or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Ideally a member of an associated professional body i.e. RICS, RIBA.
  • Will have completed construction projects from initial design through fit out and the hand-over to a user group.
  • Ideally will have worked in disciplined/high technology environments i.e. Aero, Space or Pharmaceutical.
  • Will have a level of experience in security infrastructure systems for classified/sensitive environments.
  • At least 6 years of professional experience within the construction industry.
