The Chief Scientific Adviser for Health, Social Care and Early Years Group is a key position within the Welsh Government, responsible for providing scientific advice related to health and care, and promoting health and care research in Wales.
The role involves ensuring that research, science advice, and evidence are robust, relevant, and high-quality, underpinning policy development and evaluation. The post holder will work closely with colleagues across Welsh Government and the health and social care sectors to enhance coordination between research, development, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent scientific advice and analysis on health topics to policymakers and the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care.
- Ensure research and evidence are of high quality and relevant.
- Oversee scientific advisory committees, including the Technical Advisory Group (TAG).
- Support research policy and priorities, with a focus on influencing at the UK level.
- Foster collaborations with academia, industry, and healthcare providers to maximize the impact of science in health.
- Build relationships with key partners, including UK and Welsh government departments, NHS Wales, UKHSA, NIHR, UKRI, research charities, and industry.
- Represent Welsh Government in relevant advisory committees and panels, and support the UK Chief Scientific Adviser network.
- Participate in the Chief Medical Officer’s Senior Leadership Team and deputize when necessary.
