This job advert is for the role of a Ship Structural Specialist working with liquified gas membrane containment systems, as part of LR's Global Technical Support Office. Whilst the successful candidate will principally be based at our Southampton office, we work flexibly at Lloyds Register so a mixture of home and regular office working would be offered.

As part of a dedicated global team, supporting a growth area of the business, you will principally be working on a variety of new-build and existing ship projects for builders around the world. Your work will involve supporting our local and global clients and our site surveyors by undertaking design appraisal, design support work, and answering a wide range of technical queries.

You will have access to a range of training courses and professional development opportunities to develop your knowledge and expertise. Working at Lloyd's Register, you will be part of a wider team working alongside many other engineering, software, and consultancy departments.

This position is for a Specialist, however, depending on the level of experience of the candidate a Senior Specialist position may be offered.

What we offer you:

  • The opportunity to work for an organization that has a strong sense of purpose, is value driven and helps colleagues to develop professionally and personally through our range of people development programmes.
  • A Full-time permanent role.

The role:

  • Working as a technical member of the Specialized Ship Structures team carrying out design appraisal, independent calculations, and consultancy against Class Rules and statutory codes.
  • You will principally be working with LNG membrane containment systems, but there may be opportunities to be involved with other gas containment systems (e.g. Ammonia, Hydrogen) and other ship types, in line with business needs.
  • Contributing ideas and creative solutions for a variety of structural problems through direct calculations and application of LR's Rules and Regulations & other international standards and codes.
  • Providing technical advice to internal and external clients globally, which will include designers, shipyards and other LR surveyors and specialists.
  • Contributing to Technology and Rule Development Projects and Proposals to ensure our Rules remain up to date and in line with the latest industry innovations.
  • Assisting the team leader and other senior team members in the bid and win process for new projects by accurately estimating time requirements.
  • Managing plan approval projects including monitoring of project progress and spend against budget and contractual requirements.
  • Actively seeking to ensure client satisfaction and to generate new opportunities with our clients.

The above description does not preclude the assignment of other duties by the Specialised Ship Structures team lead or their line manager.

What you bring:

  • The candidate should have a degree in naval architecture, structural engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd's Register.
  • Experience of ship structural design (including fatigue calculations) and the application of Class Rules to the design and construction of liquid gas containment systems.
  • Experience with the practical application of LR's Gas Ship Rules & Gas Fuelled Ship Rules and the IMO IGC/IGF Codes is desirable.
  • Experience working in shipyards and/or for ship-owners is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of all regulatory bodies (LR, IACS, IMO, flag States and EU), including how they operate and interact.
  • Knowledge of the structural configuration features and arrangements of the various types of liquefied gas ships, their containment systems, and their supporting arrangements.
  • General appreciation of sloshing, the factors which cause it and the strength of structures to withstand it.
  • Understanding of the operation of liquefied gas ships, including loading and unloading.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Proficiency in the English Language (written and oral) commensurate with the work and an ability to write detailed technical reports and design appraisal documentation.
  • The individual should have an understanding of the responsibilities of a Classification Society, and the interface between Class Rules and Statutory Regulations.

We are committed to making all stages of our recruitment process accessible to all candidates. Please let us know if you need any assistance or reasonable adjustments throughout your application and we will do everything we possibly can to support you.
