About this opportunity: We’re transforming how we deliver and run technology at Lloyds Banking Group. We’re building modern, innovative solutions using new technologies to better serve our customers and doing it safely. To achieve this, our systems must be resilient, available and able to recover quickly when issues occur. We need clear visibility of risks, strong ownership, and meaningful insights that support informed decision‑making. We want technology risk to be understood, not just processed. Our goal is to highlight the real impact of decisions, help leaders make confident choices, and use operational data to understand our risk exposure in real time. As we adopt new technology, we’re also putting technical guardrails in place – making it easy for engineers to do the right thing, and harder to do the wrong thing.
The role focuses on ensuring that the adoption of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Generative AI, and AI‑enabled third‑party services does not introduce unacceptable levels of technology, resilience, or operational risk, and that AI solutions are implemented in a way that is safe, resilient, well‑governed, and aligned to risk appetite and regulatory expectations. Operating at Level 2, the role does not own or build AI solutions, but instead:
- Challenges design and architectural decisions
- Assesses AI‑specific failure modes and dependencies
- Provides thematic and scenario‑led risk insight
- Influences safer outcomes through evidence‑based oversight
The role works closely with Technology, Engineering, Data, Security, Model Risk, and Compliance teams, providing a technology‑centric risk lens on AI use cases while coordinating with other risk specialists for non‑IT risk dimensions (e.g. data ethics, model bias, or consumer harm).
We're looking for capable, articulate, and motivated individuals with:
- Deep operational expertise aligned to IT systems risk across a financial services group.
- Detailed knowledge of key Artificial Intelligence risks facing financial services, with proven ability to assess and manage risk, set policy, design controls, provide assurance, and balance risk and reward.
- Experience in IT Risk, Technology Risk, Operational Resilience, or IT Service Risk, ideally within a 2LoD oversight or assurance role.
- Strong understanding of enterprise technology environments, including cloud, distributed systems, APIs, and platform‑based architectures.
- Experience assessing risk across end‑to‑end technology stacks, rather than isolated components.
- Practical experience assessing or working with AI‑enabled systems, such as Generative AI / LLM‑based tools, ML platforms and pipelines, AI‑enabled SaaS or vendor products.
- Understanding of how AI systems differ from traditional applications.
- Ability to identify AI technology risks without needing to be a data scientist or model developer.
- Familiarity with AI risk and governance frameworks (e.g. NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001, emerging regulatory standards) and OWASP guidance.
- Awareness of regulatory expectations around AI, operational resilience, and third‑party risk.
- Experience working alongside Model Risk, Data Risk, or Cyber Security teams, understanding how responsibilities intersect.
- Strong understanding of laws, regulations, industry standards, and technical practices.
- Experience developing and owning group‑level policy, setting risk appetite, and monitoring group exposure.
- Experience as a Risk Specialist business partner, collaborating with Risk Owners, Control Owners, and Control Offices.
- Understanding of the roles across all lines of defence and ability to act as the primary Operational Risk expert.
- Experience building effective, data‑led Operational Risk control objectives, including with external regulators.
- Ability to inspire and mentor others, fostering inclusive collaboration and building teams aligned to our Group Strategy and Purpose.
