About this opportunity

Want to use your software engineering skills to help protect millions of customers and colleagues? At Lloyds Banking Group, we're continuing our digital transformation and investing heavily in technology, data and security. Within our Chief Security Office, the Insider Risk Management team plays a critical role in helping keep our customers, colleagues and assets safe!

We're a collaborative team of insider risk analysts and software engineers who work together to improve how we identify, investigate and manage insider risk. We combine software engineering, analytics and behavioural insights to deliver the Group's Insider Strategy, support data-led decision making and contribute to industry-wide conversations on insider risk!

We're looking for a Software Engineer with strong front-end development experience to help us develop innovative tools and capabilities. This is primarily a front-end engineering role, with approximately 60% of your time focused on designing, building and enhancing user-facing applications. The remaining time will be spent supporting back-end services, APIs and integrations that underpin these solutions.

As a Software Engineer, you'll:

  • Build and enhance user-facing applications that improve analyst workflows, case management and risk investigations.
  • Design and develop detection capabilities and software solutions that help identify potential insider risk events.
  • Explore emerging technologies and third-party solutions, bringing new ideas and challenging existing approaches.
  • Improve processes through automation, analytics and modern engineering practices.
  • Collaborate across the team to share knowledge, develop engineering capability and contribute to innovation initiatives, hackathons and technical communities.

What you'll need

We're looking for software engineers who can demonstrate experience across several of the following areas:

  • Software Engineering: Developing high-quality, reusable and maintainable software solutions using modern programming languages, frameworks and engineering practices.
  • Technical Delivery: Delivering reliable technology solutions that meet user needs and support business outcomes.
  • Problem Solving: Analysing complex challenges, identifying root causes and creating practical, scalable solutions.
  • Collaboration: Working effectively with engineers, analysts and stakeholders to achieve shared objectives.
  • Experience developing web applications using technologies such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React or Java.
  • Experience integrating APIs into modern, data-driven applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP), AWS or Azure.
  • Interest in data analysis and using data to identify patterns, anomalies and opportunities.

We know skills can be developed in many different ways. If your experience doesn't align perfectly with every requirement listed, we'd still love to hear from you.

And any experience of this would be really useful:

  • Ethical and responsible use of AI and machine learning technologies.
  • Infrastructure as Code practices.
  • Git source code management.
  • Complex SQL query development.
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Agile delivery approaches including Scrum and Kanban.
  • Container technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

How to prepare for a job interview at Lloyds Bank

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Lloyds Bank uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
