Location: Manchester

Hours: Full-Time

Working Pattern: Hybrid – at least two days per week, or 40% of time, at the Manchester site.

What you’ll be doing: As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll play a key role in transforming our Core Banking Platform by leveraging modern technologies such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and a micro‑services‑based architecture. You’ll bring modern software engineering practices, strong communication skills, and the ability to lead technical discussions with architects and other functions to design the software appropriately.

Responsibilities:

  • Write object‑oriented back‑end code, ideally with expertise in Java.
  • Apply software fundamentals including data types, threading, memory management and debugging techniques.
  • Promote agile practices and champion high‑quality engineering.
  • Use design patterns and implement test‑driven development techniques.
  • Manage technical debt and deliver in both technical and business conversations.
  • Quickly pick up new technologies and adapt to evolving environments.
  • Be a great problem‑solver, self‑starter and proactive question‑asker.

Qualifications:

  • Deep experience with Java for backend coding.
  • Strong object‑oriented design and knowledge of design patterns.
  • Problem‑solving, debugging and application/solution design skills.
  • Clean coding practices and appreciation of design patterns.
  • Excellent communication skills and some leadership experience or potential.

Experience (desired):

  • Test‑Driven Development, test automation, asynchronous communication patterns, Domain‑Driven Design (strategic and tactical), micro‑service architectures, SpringBoot, Apache Kafka, Docker‑based container development and deployment on Kubernetes, and cloud computing (ideally GCP).

Relevant transferable experience is encouraged.
