We have a new contract vacancy for an experienced person to join a 450-acre family farming operation, near Glastonbury, Somerset. This 275-cow herd of Holsteins are all year-round calving and yielding 10,000 litres with good components on 2 x milking via a 24 x 24 Fullwood herringbone parlour with Crystal software. The parlour is under 10 years old and consists of auto pre and post teat spray, along with excellent handling facilities. Cows are housed year-round, fed a home-grown grass and maize TMR with additional cake in the parlour, housed in cubicles with mattresses bedded with sawdust.
The appointed person who will have a full-time assistant will be responsible for:
- All milkings
- Sorting cows for the fortnightly vet visit and the contract foot trimmer
- Keeping the parlour in a clean and maintained condition
- Taking responsibility for all paperwork to include the medicine book, daily diary, Delvo testing, entering all information in the Crystal software
- Overseeing the welfare of the herd, including some night checks and calvings, although calves will be reared by other staff
RMS is taking care of the breeding programme, with all youngstock AI to sexed semen, and cows bred to maintain the 382-day calving index. A competitive package to go along with a large 3-bedroom detached house on farm, and away from the unit, is on offer. This farm prides itself on having long standing staff and creates an environment to maintain that, while being in a village that has a good primary school, close to village shops, and also near larger towns.
