A fantastic opportunity has arisen to become part of a successful dairy business milking 530 cows and producing four million litres of high-quality milk for a premium stilton maker near Newark in Nottinghamshire. We require a very enthusiastic and versatile Herd Manager to manage the day-to-day running of this large dairy unit. The successful candidate will work closely with the herdsman, farm manager and other staff on the 230-cow spring block-calving grazing system and the 300-cow autumn block calving system.

This exciting position has the following key responsibilities / accountabilities:

  • Staff management
  • Overseeing youngstock rearing
  • Milk quality
  • Fertility planning
  • Grassland management
  • Training / mentoring of staff
  • Further development of business

This forward-thinking business has the following:

  • Modern 24:48 parlour with ACRs and backing gate
  • Great cow housing - cubicles & auto scrapers
  • Two calving blocks autumn and spring
  • Paddock grazing - excellent track infrastructure & grassland management
  • Aim to graze March - November
  • TMR feeding
  • Milk sold on a premium cheese contract
  • Active member of local discussion group

The successful candidate will be a very enthusiastic person with a positive attitude who leads by example and has very high standards in whatever they do. Experience in managing a team, milking, grassland management (preferable, but not essential) and staff development are essential for this role. You will need to be an ambitious person who is able to use their initiative and be able to take and delegate responsibility for the key areas to enable them to run smoothly.
