I’m currently working with a well-established, multi-office law firm that is looking to appoint an experienced Family Lawyer into a senior leadership position as Head of Department – Family Law. This role would suit a qualified Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive (with appropriate Practitioner Rights) who is ready to take ownership of a Family department, contribute strategically to its growth, and lead a team while maintaining a strong personal caseload. The firm operates across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, with flexibility on office location.
The Role
- Leadership & Management
- Overall responsibility for the Family Department across all offices
- Recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding of new team members
- Reviewing and maintaining compliant precedents, policies, and processes
- Work allocation for new starters and leavers
- Liaising with HR on employee-related matters
- Providing remote support to fee earners across offices
- Promoting an inclusive and collaborative departmental culture
- Compliance & Supervision
- Chairing quarterly departmental meetings
- Supervising up to 3 team members, including technical and probation reviews
- Reviewing all Family supervision reports
- Attending six-monthly Head of Department meetings
- Oversight of high-risk matters
- Client Work & Business Development
- Managing a varied Family law caseload
- Generating new work and maintaining long-term client relationships
- Developing the department and increasing cross-referrals
- Meeting agreed fee income targets
- Staying up to date with changes in Family law and practice
- Marketing & Profile
- Attending networking and marketing events
- Working closely with the firm’s Marketing team
- Collaborating with other department heads to encourage cross-referrals
- Leading the annual Legal 500 submission for the Family team
The Ideal Candidate
- Experienced Family Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive
- Previous management or supervisory experience (or ready to step up)
- Strong organisational and commercial awareness
- High standards of client care and compliance
- Confident communicator with a collaborative leadership style
