The VTS Operator provides information and instructions to vessels appropriate to the level of service provided by the VTS and determines actions to be taken in response to maritime traffic data. The role reports to the Harbour Master.
Responsibilities
- Communicate with ships by phone, email, and radio to convey required information.
- Operate communication, data collection, and data analysis equipment to establish a traffic image.
- Transmit information at appropriate times or when requested by a vessel or harbour user, and when needed to aid a ship in difficult navigational or meteorological circumstances or in case of defects or deficiencies.
- Organise shipping traffic through promulgating information, traffic monitoring, and traffic regulations using nautical knowledge of the area, the traffic image, and the marine information management system.
- Respond to emergency situations such as distress calls and marine pollution incidents, and coordinate communications where appropriate.

- Current and valid IALA C0103‑1 certificate.
- Strong communication skills and ability to operate relevant equipment.
Benefits and Conditions
- Grade: H/I.
- Salary inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,997 per annum (pro rata), contracted overtime payment, and unsocial allowance.
- Permanent full‑time position: 40.6 hours per week (37 hours plus 3.6 hours contracted overtime) over 52.18 weeks per year.
- Relocation package does not apply.
- Interview expenses within Shetland will be reimbursed.
