About The Role

As a Teacher of Craft, Design, and Technology (CDT) you’ll support and inspire pupils to develop practical skills by designing and making products using tools and technology, covering areas from woodwork to computer-aided design. The role involves planning lessons, supervising practical work, assessing pupil progress, and encouraging creativity and problem‑solving.

Specific Duties

  • Teach Design & Making: Guide pupils in designing and creating various products, using both traditional tools and modern technology.
  • Develop Practical Skills: Instruct pupils on how to use machinery, tools, and software, such as computer‑aided design (CAD) systems and woodworking equipment.
  • Promote Creativity & Problem‑Solving: Empower pupils to translate ideas into reality, understand how things work, and find ways to improve them.
  • Manage Learning: Prepare lesson plans, teach classes, set homework, monitor progress, and mark work.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders: Discuss pupil development with parents and caregivers.

About Sandwick Junior High School

Sandwick Junior High School is a non‑denominational school in Sandwick, located in the South Mainland of Shetland. It provides an all‑year‑round early years provision as well as an out‑of‑school care provision for Primary aged pupils. The primary school serves the community of Sandwick and surrounding areas. The Secondary department has classes from S1 to S4 and caters for pupils from the South Mainland schools. The feeder primaries are Sandwick, Cunningsburgh and Dunrossness. The school roll is currently around 200 pupils. The school is managed by a Head Teacher, two Deputy Head Teachers, a Principal Teacher for Pupil Support, a Principal Teacher for Additional Support Needs and a Manager of Early Learning and Childcare and Out of School Club. The school has extensive school grounds and these provide wonderful opportunities for outside play and learning. We have active Pupil Councils in the Primary and Secondary departments. We are also very fortunate to have a very supportive, active and engaged Parent and Carer Council.

About Anderson High School

Anderson High School is a six‑year school serving the Shetland community, with its associated primary schools of Bell’s Brae, Hamnavoe, Nesting, Scalloway, Sound, Tingwall and Whiteness. In addition, pupils from the small islands of Fair Isle and Foula attend the school for up to six years. The school also serves all pupils in Shetland for S5 and S6, except for those attending Brae High School. There are extensive transport arrangements into Lerwick, and halls of residence accommodation for those pupils unable to travel each day.

If not, candidates should detail in their application whether they have sought confirmation that they will be able to be registered with the GTCS. As well as the relevant qualifications and experience, qualities we are looking for in the successful candidate are: vision, energy, initiative, good communication skills and self‑discipline. In August 2024, 1,028 pupils were enrolled at Anderson High School. The Head Teacher is Mr Robin Calder.

  • The grade of this post is TCHR.
  • Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of ÂŁ2,859 per annum (pro rata).
  • Permanent Full Time post for 35.0 Hours per Week.
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made.
