Job Overview

Learning Support Worker to assist in the management and education of children and young people with additional support needs (ASN) at Bell’s Brae Primary School, Lerwick, Shetland. Work may involve individual or group support within a department or mainstream class, following an individualised education programme and coordinating with professionals such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and child psychologists.

Responsibilities

  • Support teaching and learning of children with ASN, adapting lessons and activities.
  • Implement and monitor individualised education programmes.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents and external professionals to ensure consistent support.
  • Provide classroom and activity support to maintain a safe and inclusive environment.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Qualified Learning Support Worker or Unqualified Learning Support Worker, assessed during the selection process.
  • Experience working with children with special educational needs or additional support needs.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and willingness to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme.

Salary & Working Hours

  • Temporary Part‑Time post: 30.0 hours per week during the school year.
  • Contract length: approximately 12 months, plus 6.24 weeks pro‑rata paid holiday.
  • Rate inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance: £1.5523 per hour.
  • Not career graded; salary will depend on qualification level.
