Electrician Apprenticeship Overview

Course Title: Electrical Installation – SCQF Level 7

Location: Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire

Contract Type: Fixed Term Apprenticeship

Salary: Offering the nationally agreed apprentice pay rates, plus excellent company benefits. (You will be paid for your normal working hours plus your attendance at college)

Training Provider – SECTT – New College Lanarkshire – Motherwell

Start Date – 3 August 2026 (Provisional)

Course Length: The programme has an expected duration of approximately 4 years.

Entry Criteria

Entry Criteria for roles – Nat 5 English, Maths, preferably Physics / Pre-apprenticeship / Potential to work towards SVQ level 6 & 7. Candidates will undertake a pre-employment assessment and interview.

What does a role as an Electrician look like?

As an Electrician you will be involved in installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems including lighting, sockets, machines, and alarms. You will assist customers in understanding how their appliances work and how to manage their energy usage efficiently.

Apprenticeship content

  • Apply Health and Safety and Environmental Legislation in the Building Services Engineering Sector
  • Establish and Maintain Good Working Relationships
  • Install Enclosures for Electrical Cables, Conductors and Wiring Systems
  • Install and Connect Electrical Cables, Conductors, Wiring Systems and Equipment
  • Inspect and Test Electrical Systems and Equipment
  • Commission Electrical Systems and Equipment
  • Identify and Rectify Faults in Electrical Systems and Equipment
  • Maintain Electrical Systems and Equipment
  • FICA Final Integrated Competence Assessment

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will achieve an Electrotechnical qualification and will have satisfied the requirements for registration as Eng Tech by the Engineering Council.

What you need to be a successful applicant

  • The potential to work at SCQF level 6/7
  • The ability and desire to learn and develop a thorough knowledge of the skills, technology and safety procedures required to carry out the full range of tasks
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain good customer/client relationships

You must live within a North Lanarkshire postcode and be able to independently travel to and from the branch.

During your apprenticeship you will have a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn and will receive formal training coupled with working alongside our skilled workforce who will inspire and train you in the practical elements of the trade. The Electrical Installation apprenticeship programme takes between 38 and 42 months to complete.

Application Process

All applicants must submit their CV and complete the apprenticeship questionnaire via the Mears Careers website. If shortlisted, you will be contacted to confirm whether you have been selected for the next stage - this may be an assessment centre or an individual interview. Please note: as part of the selection process, you will be required to complete a basic maths and English test, similar to the assessments needed to join the college.

All our roles require candidates to have the entitlement to work within the UK, Mears does not currently offer visa sponsorship. To drive a Mears vehicle, you must be aged over 21, have held your licence for over 3 months and have less than 9 points. Candidates should be aware that all our roles are subject to relevant Background, Identity & Security checks before commencement of employment.
