Applications are invited for the Clinical Teaching Fellow in Adult Mental Health (AMH) post at Livewell Southwest (LSW). This post will be based within the Home Treatment Team in Plymouth and has been developed in partnership with the Peninsula Medical School at the University of Plymouth. It offers an excellent opportunity to combine clinical practice with medical education in a supportive and forward-thinking environment. The post comprises 40% clinical commitment within adult psychiatry and 60% teaching.
The successful candidate will be planning a career in psychiatry potentially with membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The post would suit a doctor wishing to broaden experience in AMH Services prior to application for specialty training. This post will start in August 2026.
Main duties of the job
In applying for this post, you will be particularly passionate about academic teaching, development and delivering training opportunities for various grades of medical staff. You will be well organised and an excellent communicator in order to balance the commitments of both the clinical and academic parts of the post. There are a host of exciting development opportunities for the right candidate as you will be working in a department that has a strong tradition in teaching and training both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
The clinical aspect of the role can be tailored to the successful applicant's level of experience and interests with rotational or single placement options in adult acute inpatient, liaison psychiatry, rehabilitation or community mental health teams. A total of four clinical sessions will be dedicated to the clinical need of adults with mental health needs, and up to four are available for academic activities worked flexibly. There will be an expectation that the candidate participates, and leads on, the delivery of weekly teaching to the medical students, and provides teaching to other trainees. In addition, there is plenty of scope for a special interest.

This is a well-supported 12-month post (with the possibility of extension) with a variety of interesting activities in Mental Health across Plymouth. It would suit a doctor with membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists seeking to broaden experience in AMHS prior to application to specialty training, or a trainee wishing to take time out of training (although GMC approval would be required in the latter case) to pursue an academic project. The department has a strong tradition in teaching and training, both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

Person Specification
- Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Full registration with GMC with a licence to practice.
- Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent.
- Teaching qualification.
- Eligible for Section 12 Approval.
- Experience
- Minimum of four months post graduate experience working in Psychiatry.
- Minimum of six months post graduate work within the NHS.
- Knowledge of current mental health legislation with clear understanding of legislation relevant to adults.
- Ability to interview and assess adult mentally ill and write comprehensive, clear medical notes.
- Ability to manage potentially violent and disturbed patients.
- Ability to form good working relationships within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Willingness to undertake work in a clinic and community setting.
- Two years post graduate experience in Psychiatry.
- Completion of Core Training Programme in RCPsych Approved Training Scheme.
- Prior experience in writing reports and presenting at First Tier Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Manager Hearings.

- Passion for, and experience of, teaching medical undergraduates.
- Confidence in teaching psychiatry.
- Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback on performance to support student's development.
- Formal qualification in Medical Education (PGCert Med Ed or similar).
- Experience in facilitating teaching programmes for undergraduate medical students.
