The Hewitt Fertility Centre is seeking to appoint a medical laboratory assistant to join our highly skilled and dedicated team of 35 scientists. We provide the very best in patient care and offer a full range of therapeutic and diagnostic treatments (Including diagnostic, cryopreservation and donation programmes).

The Hewitt Fertility Centre offers the very latest technologies for all patients treated in our state-of-the-art laboratories. Successful applicants should be personable with excellent communication skills.

To assist the scientific team in the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic Andrology services provided by the Hewitt Fertility Centre. Ensuring compliance with the HF&E Act and HFEA Code of Practice (current edition) and all other prevailing legislation. To maintain a high-quality andrology service and to follow ISO 15189 standards to maintain UKAS accreditation.

Assisting the scientific team to ensure efficient running of the diagnostic andrology service. This is a patient facing role that encompasses patient pathway and experience, stock management and equipment maintenance.

Main duties and responsibilities
1. To assist the Andrologists (and Embryologists) in the provision of diagnostic and
therapeutic Andrology services provided by the Hewitt Fertility Centre.
2. To greet patients attending the Andrology Laboratory.
3. To effectively obtain requisite identifying information and other information from patients.
4. To arrange appointments, directly and by telephone, for patients attending the Andrology Laboratory
5. To prepare casenotes and packs for patients requiring sperm freezing.
6. To pull, track and file casenotes needed by the laboratories for treatment and audit purposes.
7. To receive, and appropriately direct, semen samples (produced on and off-site) from patients attending the Andrology Laboratory.
8. To receive, and appropriately direct, blood samples from patients attending the Hewitt Fertility Centre or other departments within the organisation.
9. To register patients on relevant systems in order to create appointments for patients prior to preparing and sending out packs for GP referrals, appropriate for post vasectomy, vasectomy reversal or fertility patients for Hewitt Fertility Centre and satellite centres.
10. To liaise directly and by telephone with the Andrologists, other members of the Hewitt Fertility Centre staff and hospital staff ensuring that information is conveyed to colleagues accurately and in a timely manner.
11. To consult the shared Andrology email inbox frequently on a daily basis ensuring urgent queries are dealt with in a timely manner.
12. To undertake the formal witnessing of procedures as required by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
13. To perform a daily audit of all equipment to ensure that they are functioning correctly and within critical parameters. To assist with the maintenance of laboratory equipment and cleaning of the embryology and andrology laboratories.
14. To use relevant computer systems within the Hewitt Fertility Centre and trust wide.
15. To assist in the audit requirements of the Andrology and Embryology Laboratories.
16. To assist in maintaining stock or consumable levels within the Andrology and Embryology Laboratories, preparing sample pots for use etc.
17. To monitor and maintain the liquid nitrogen storage facilities.
18. To assist in maintaining the highest degree of cleanliness and tidiness within the Andrology and Embryology Laboratories
19. To participate in maintaining Health & Safety regulations for the Andrology Laboratory.
20. To follow procedures, standards and protocols to ensure the best possible clinical outcomes and to ensure that procedures are performed effectively and to the highest possible standard, paying meticulous attention to detail.
21. To perform all duties in accordance with the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Act (1990) and the Code of Practice issued by the Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority and ISO 15189 appropriate editions.
22. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide the highest possible standard of patient care.
23. To work flexibly and perform tasks as and when necessary including out of ‘normal working hours’ and to participate in a weekend rota if required to do so.
24. To undertake any other additional duties appropriate to the post.
