These are 2 x 12-month posts available to start as soon as a successful candidate is identified, likely between December 2025 and March 2026. A March 2026 start date can be accommodated if the candidate needs to apply for OOP approval from a paediatric training programme.
These are senior roles, ideally suited for individuals seeking additional clinical experience in tertiary neonatal medicine or as part of a SPIN in neonatal medicine for those unable to achieve this within current paediatric training programmes. The posts are not recognised training positions but may be taken up as an OOPE and are also suitable for paediatric CCT holders to gain further neonatology experience before pursuing a Consultant role.
The role involves working on the tier 2 medical rota, providing clinical care across the Liverpool Neonatal Partnership. This includes the neonatal unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, the low dependency unit, and postnatal wards at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, as well as the neonatal unit at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. Depending on the candidate\’s needs, there may be opportunities to work primarily in the neonatal surgical intensive care unit at Alder Hey when it opens in early 2026, to develop specific surgical intensive care experience.
This is an exciting time to join the team. The new 44-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital opened in Spring 2020, and a 22-bed Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Alder Hey is scheduled to open in March 2026. This new unit will feature single-family rooms and will be the only one of its kind in the UK.
The regional neonatal unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital has 44 cots, including 12 intensive care cots, 12 high dependency cots, and 20 low dependency cots. It offers a state-of-the-art facility for world-class neonatal care and acts as a tertiary referral centre for the Cheshire and Mersey Neonatal Network, accepting referrals from beyond the network with an average of over 1200 admissions annually.
As the lead NICU for the Cheshire and Mersey Neonatal Network, responsibilities include managing babies with surgical conditions, initial care of infants with cardiac malformations requiring neonatal intervention, and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity. The unit is one of only two within the network providing intensive care for extremely preterm infants.
