Do you work for LUHFT and are seeking a new challenge? Exciting band 7 ward nurse manager opportunity for experienced Surgical registered Nurse. The post is based on Ward 4 on our Aintree site, which is a 27 bedded Trauma Orthopaedic Ward, providing post operative care, ongoing rehab and safe discharge planning for our trauma patients.

We are seeking for someone who is willing to develop into a senior Leadership and Management role. You will be expected to meet the trust core standards to ensure safe care for our service users, their families. You will be responsible to manage up to 45 members of staff and have a wide knowledge of both in internal and external assessment criteria.

The ward will be fully supported by the multidisciplinary team and clinical support will be provided by matron., The post holder will have management responsibility for the ward/department over the 24hr period, ensuring a high standard of nursing care., * Co-ordination of the ward on a day to day basis including planning, allocation and evaluation of work carried out by teams or individuals and self.

  • Provide specialist knowledge to all Nursing staff on the ward

  • Will promote a critical, analytical approach to the delivery of nursing care ensuring that the ward environment is responsive to current issues.

  • Ensure that all existing procedures and protocols relating to the care of patients are reviewed and updated as required.

  • Develop methods for identifying, maintaining and improving the quality of patient care through facilitation of best practice and clinical benchmarking.

  • Ensure due regard is given to the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients/clients.

  • Explore and undertake expanded practice to optimise patient care as required within specialist area, in accordance with Trust policies.

Management / Leadership Responsibilities

Exercise strong and effective leadership acting as an exemplary role model for the ward/department team.

  • Maintain adequate staff cover and skill mix on the ward through effective use of staffing rotas

  • Ensure staff compliance with mandatory training and maintain current records.

  • Ensure effective communication with patients and their carers.

  • Liaise with nursing, medical and allied health professional colleagues to ensure that all facets of the patients` care are covered.

  • Ensure effective communication with relatives, community nursing staff, other hospitals and local agencies to facilitate the smooth transfer and after-care of patients/clients.

  • Lead ward team meeting to ensure appropriate information is communicated to all team members

  • Ensure that the ward participates in maintaining standards relating to clinical governance.

  • Responsible for the implementation of risk management policies within the ward/department, including the development, implementation and monitoring of action plans to address identified risks.

  • Responds within appropriate timeframes to patient complaints and concerns and ensure outcomes and action plans are implemented and monitored

  • Responsible for ensuring compliance with Trust policies and procedures.

  • In collaboration with the matron, implement the Trust grievance/disciplinary policy with the aim of ensuring early identification of performance issues

  • Monitor and manage staff sickness/absence following the Trust guidelines, and liaise with the Matron as necessary.

  • Participate in recruitment and selection of staff within the nursing team ensuring appropriate policies are adhered to.

  • Support the implementation of the Trusts Human Resources Strategy including the principles of Improving Working Lives and Investors in People.

  • Monitor performance of staff ensuring that learning needs are identified through personal development plans, appraisal systems and supervised practice

  • Contribute to planning, monitoring and control of resources.

  • Contribute to nursing developments across the organisation via appropriate forums as required

  • Support the implementation of the Trusts Strategy for Nursing at ward/department level

  • Participate in Senior Nurse Directorate cover as necessary, * Identify staff training and development needs via personal development plans ensuring that this informs the Trusts annual Training Needs Analysis

  • Ensure appropriate allocation of study time for professional development and staff compliance with Trusts study leave policy

  • Ensure dissemination of information from individuals undertaking professional development to the ward team, patients and carers; inclusive of the link nurse network

  • Collaborate with the clinical practice facilitators and Institutes of Higher Education to develop and promote an effective and responsive clinical learning environment

  • Ensure that nursing care is wherever possible is evidence based. Encourage and initiate nursing audit and research, assisting with the implementation of findings where appropriate.

  • Develop competency based training packages for use within the ward/department; inclusive of preceptorship, pre and post registration nurses, The Trust is committed to promoting a healthy work-life balance and achieve fair, equitable and consistent practice. Trust policy requires that the cost of submitting & processing the successful applicant/s DBS application be recovered via salary deduction following start in post. The amount of £23 (standard disclosure) or £43 (enhanced disclosure) will be deducted from salary, in manageable monthly instalments for up to 3 months following commencement of employment. Bank posts require upfront payment. DBS applications submitted from 2nd December will be subject to the new DBS fee of £26.50 (standard) and £54.50 (Enhanced).

Minimum of 2 years Orthopaedic experience and minimum 12months band 6 experience is required for this application., * Registered Nurse, current NMC registration

  • Teaching and assessing qualification

  • Post registration qualification in specialty

Desirable criteria

  • 1st level degree or studying towards, * Demonstrable experience at Band 6 level

  • Evidence of effective ward management and leadership skills

  • Evidence of staff development, including pre and post registration students

  • Evidence of application of current nursing issues and developments

  • Evidence of managing a change

  • Evidence of developing standards of nursing care through clinical benchmarking, Understanding and application of clinical governance, Excellent communication skills

  • Basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing, * High level of personal and professional credibility
