Overview

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit volunteers to enhance patient experience and support staff at Aintree Hospital. The closing date is 24 September 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Help improve patient experience by providing a friendly welcome, emotional support, reassurance and companionship to patients and their families.
  • Provide support, companionship and appropriate activities for patients with dementia or learning disabilities.
  • Assist in preparing patients for mealtimes and help with menu choices; assist patients with eating and drinking and provide refreshments.
  • Complete basic tasks and assist patients within the Volunteer Role Boundaries (attached).
  • Run errands for patients to purchase newspapers, magazines, snacks as required.
  • Read to patients, play games, complete jigsaws and puzzles.
  • Tidying and restocking information racks and notice boards with appropriate resources under the guidance of the Ward Manager.
  • Act as an \”alerter\” to escalate any concerns/issues to the Nursing Team.
  • Additional duties may include feeding patients who need added support (only after specific training has been given) and other patient experience activities.

Requirements / Attributes

  • Ability to communicate with all groups of people, in a helpful and accommodating manner.
  • Sensitive, compassionate and tactful.
  • Ability to give clear and concise directions.
  • Able to work on own or as part of a team and in collaboration with ward staff and other volunteers.
  • Work within role and organisational boundaries.
  • Commitment of a minimum of 3 hours per week for at least 6 months.
  • Volunteers must be aged 18 or over to volunteer on the ward.

Job responsibilities

Ward Volunteer

  • Help improve patient experience by providing a friendly welcome, emotional support, reassurance and companionship to patients and their families.
  • Provide support, companionship and appropriate activities for patients with dementia or learning disabilities.
  • Assist in preparing patients for mealtimes and helping with menu choices.
  • Assist patients with eating and drinking and provide refreshments to patients.
  • Feeding of patients who need additional support (only after specific training has been given).
  • Take a pack of patient experience surveys to your ward area from the Volunteer Services Office to complete surveys with patients and collect data and feedback.
  • Complete basic tasks and assist patients within the Volunteer Role Boundaries (attached).
  • Run errands for patients to purchase newspapers/magazines/snacks as required.
  • Tidying the patient’s bed space (locker tops/tables) to keep areas clean and tidy.
  • Contact family to arrange toiletries to be brought into hospital for the patient.
  • Reading to patients, playing games, completing jigsaws and puzzles.
  • Tidying and restocking information racks and notice boards with appropriate resources under the guidance of the Ward Manager.
  • Act as an alerter to escalate any concerns/issues to the Nursing Team.

Person Specification

Skills

  • Good interpersonal skills: welcoming, friendly, polite and caring with patients, visitors and staff; sensitive, compassionate and tactful.
  • Good communication skills; able to listen and work with ward staff and other volunteers.
  • Reliable, honest and punctual; able to work within role boundaries.

Experience

  • Previous volunteering or experience in health or social care is not required, but any relevant life experiences should be detailed on the application.

Other

  • To embody the Trust Values; exercise confidentiality and discretion.
