We are seeking two motivated and compassionate Radiology Department Assistant (Band 3) to join our dedicated team at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. In this vital role, you will be an integral part of a high-performing clinical team, delivering exceptional patient-centred care and supporting world-class diagnostic outcomes. While prior Radiology experience is not required--as comprehensive training will be provided--successful applicants must possess previous experience in a healthcare setting and demonstrate excellent communication skills. This position offers a unique career pathway: you will be based at LHCH for the first 12 months, with the exciting potential to expand your scope across the wider University Hospitals of Liverpool Group thereafter.

Main duties of the job

As a Radiology Department Assistant, you will provide vital clinical and administrative support to ensure the department runs safely and efficiently. Your main duties will include:

Clinical Support & Observations: Perform a range of essential clinical tasks, including cannulation for CT and MR scans, producing high-quality 12-lead ECGs, and monitoring patient vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, and oxygen saturation.

Direct Patient Care: Prepare and escort patients for procedures, assisting them on and off examination tables while prioritising their comfort, dignity, and cultural needs.

Safety & Infection Control: Maintain a sterile and safe environment by assisting with the rigorous cleaning of scanners and adhering to strict infection control measures.

Communication & Documentation: Act as a key point of contact for patients--listening to concerns and providing reassurance--while utilising departmental IT systems like CRIS to accurately record physiological data and manage patient information.

Professionalism: Maintain strict confidentiality and professional attitude at all times, ensuring every individual is treated with the utmost courtesy and respect.

Job responsibilities

Principal Accountabilities

1. Clinical Care & Patient Support

Direct Care: Provide high-quality care tailored to individual needs, ensuring patients are prepared for examinations while respecting cultural differences, privacy, and dignity.

Clinical Procedures: Undertake essential tasks including cannulation for patients undergoing CT and MR scans.

Diagnostics: Produce high-quality 12-lead ECGs and perform clinical observations (pulse, respiration, blood pressure, oxygen saturation) and report any adverse signs to senior staff.

Mobility & Comfort: Assist patients with personal hygiene, dressing, and safely moving on and off examination tables. Escort and transport patients within the department, acting as a chaperone when required.

Communication: Act as a liaison between patients and the clinical team; listen to patient concerns, provide reassurance, and ensure all communication is handled with strict confidentiality.

2. Technical & Environmental Support

Procedure Preparation: Set up medical trolleys for sterile procedures and ensure efficient clearing/disinfection afterward.

Infection Control: Maintain rigorous hygiene standards by cleaning scanners and clinical areas daily, and performing deep cleans following contact with infectious patients.

IT & Administration: Utilise departmental IT systems, including the Computerised Radiology Information System (CRIS), to record physiological readings and manage patient data.

Stock Management: Monitor and replenish clinical stock levels to ensure the department remains fully operational.

Safety & Security: Ensure the safe custody of patient valuables and contribute to a safe environment for all visitors and staff.

3. Radiation Protection & MR Safety

Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to radiographic protocols and policies as required under ionising radiation regulations, complying with IR(ME)R and IRR standards.

MR Safety: strictly follow local MR safety rules and regulations to ensure the safety of patients and staff within the magnetic field environment.

4. Clinical Governance & Quality

Health & Safety: Comply with all Trust Health & Safety policies, including the reporting of accidents, incidents, or potential hazards.

Mandatory Training: Attend all specified mandatory training sessions and e-learning modules, maintaining compliance throughout your employment.

Equity & Diversity: Carry out duties while respecting the diverse cultural beliefs and customs of both patients and colleagues.

5. Training & Development

In-Service Growth: Actively participate in the departmental in-service training programme and attend relevant external courses as agreed with management.

Personal Development: Engage in regular appraisal sessions to identify growth opportunities and disseminate new knowledge to the wider team.

Service Evolution: Participate in the modernisation of Radiology services and rotate through various areas of the Radiology department as required.

Person Specification

Qulifications

  • GCSE - Pass in English & Maths or equivalent qualification
  • Level 3 in Healthcare
  • Previous clinical experience in a similar role within the last 3 years.
  • Experience of direct patient care.
  • Cannulation Skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of Radiology information system - CRIS
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) placement and monitoring
  • Evidence of providing high quality clinical care
  • Experience of supporting a team
  • Compassion shown when dealing with patients, families, and staff.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of the service.
