We are seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join our dynamic and dedicated clinical team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced surgeon who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care, advancing clinical excellence and contributing to the continued development of our surgical services. The job is intended to be a full time (11.75 PA) post in Cardiac Surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. While no particular surgical specifics are stipulated, the potential for sub-specialty development in line with future advances and requirements of the Trust will be strongly supported.
Overview
Main duties of the job:
- The following work pattern should be regarded as provisional; the exact weekly timetable undertaken by the appointee will depend on operational issues within the Trust. The appointee is expected to work flexibly.
- On-call for Cardiac Surgery is a 1 in 10 rota with a category A frequency payment.
- There is a significant commitment to research and audit and a training commitment to resident doctors.
- The trust supports the annual appraisal process and routine GMC revalidation for all consultants, and all consultants undergo an annual job plan.
- Full mentorship / preceptorship will be provided to the successful candidate.
About us
The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical adult cardiothoracic services to the people of Merseyside, North Wales, Isle of Man, parts of Lancashire and Cheshire; this catchment area has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. The unit is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is configured to perform up to 2,200 heart procedures and 1,500 thoracic procedures, including around 700 major thoracic operations. The full range of services for adult cardiothoracic surgical patients (except for transplantation) is provided.
Job responsibilities
The job is intended to be a full time (11.75 PA) post in general cardiac surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. While no specific surgical subspecialty is mandated, there is strong support for sub-specialty development aligned with future Trust needs. The successful candidate will have full secretarial support, a personal computer (training available if required) and office accommodation in line with other consultants in the unit.

Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration
- Entry (or planned entry) on the GMC Specialist Register via: a) Certificate of Completion of Training (proposed CCT date by August 2026) or b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or c) European Community Rights
- An appropriate higher Cardiothoracic Specialist surgical qualification (FRCS or FECTS) or equivalent
Clinical Experience
- Minimum 6 years of cardiothoracic surgery experience
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in cardiac for emergency and elective situations
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- A willingness to develop clinical skills and lead innovation in line with future cardiac surgical unit advances
Management Experience
- Evidence of ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
- Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm
- Evidence of quality improvement activities
- Evidence of completion of a management course
Teaching Experience
- Experience of teaching at Postgraduate level (e.g. delivery of teaching in an educational programme)
- Ability to teach clinical and operative skills (e.g. logbook evidence of teaching junior colleagues)
- Attendance of Training the Trainer Course
- Experience of supervising higher surgical trainees
Audit and Research Experience
- Experience of audit management (i.e. completed audit cycle)
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
- Peer reviewed publications
