We are looking for a City Reporter to join us at the Liverpool Echo. Working as part of our agenda team, you’ll cover Liverpool’s many vibrant communities and how issues like regeneration, transport, health and education affect them. Liverpool is changing all the time and this role will cover the developments that matter to our readers, celebrating the city’s successes and highlighting the challenges we face.

If you are a passionate and creative reporter, ready to cover what makes our city tick, we want to hear from you! This role is based in our Liverpool city centre Hub and we are therefore open to candidates based in and around Liverpool.

What will the role involve?

  • You will cover stories that highlight Liverpool’s past, present and future and build contacts in different communities and sectors, becoming a trusted authority on what’s really going on in our city.
  • You will work closely with other members of the brand team and be a collaborative reporter capable of telling stories in both short and long-form.
  • You will engage as many people as possible and build communities both online and in person to share published stories and engage readers in meaningful conversations about them.
  • You will tell stories in multiple formats, including real-time live blogs, articles, video, audio and pictures, ensuring every piece of content is thoroughly researched, balanced and in line with the IPSO Code.
  • You will pitch data-led story ideas to grow your performance metrics (for example, page views and revenue).
  • You will utilise AI tools, in line with company policies, to optimise content creation, improve accuracy and efficiency, and deliver engaging articles that resonate with our audience.
  • You will create engaging affiliate content that aligns with the brand and guidelines, driving traffic to partner sites and generating revenue through affiliate strategies.
  • You will tailor content for off-platform channels to enhance audience reach and engagement and, where approved by a senior editor, distribute this content while maintaining editorial standards.
  • You will consider the role of audio and video for every story, capturing or curating basic footage where appropriate to engage our audiences.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are an experienced NCTJ qualified reporter with up to date UK media law knowledge and ideally with 100 wpm shorthand (or be working towards this).
  • You have a proven track record of writing Liverpool focused digital news content across a range of topics in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • You have demonstrable experience working with a CMS, shooting video, taking pictures and utilising social media to boost your content.
  • You are an expert on all things Liverpool City Region and ideally possess a full UK driving licence that allows you to cover stories across Merseyside with ease.
  • You are a passionate reporter and team player who can meet deadlines and understands the importance of pageviews and revenue generation.

How we’ll look after you

  • 25 days' holiday (plus bank holidays), as well as an extra day after you’ve been with us for three, five and 10 years.
  • An extra day’s paid leave each year to volunteer for a cause close to your community or your heart.
  • Big moment day - an extra day’s paid leave for a moment that matters to you.
  • Bonus scheme - you’ll get a stake in our success and a chance to add to your annual earnings.
  • Help saving for your retirement - we’ll match your company pension contributions up to 6%.
  • Supportive and progressive people policies.
  • A healthcare cash plan - giving you money back for a range of medical expenses.
  • Car lease scheme - you can buy a brand new electric or hybrid car through our leasing partner.
  • Wellbeing support - including a 24/7 assistance programme for you and your family.
  • Access to lots of discounts - including 15% off with Reach's very own online marketplace.
  • Interest-free loans - including for season tickets and technology.
