The City of Liverpool College is looking for a proactive and self‑motivated Facilities Technician to join our Estates team. The role is responsible for the security, safety and general appearance of the College buildings and grounds, minor works maintenance and repairs, and ensuring a high‑quality, customer‑focused service is provided as standard.

Responsibilities

  • Be an approved key holder with responsibility for opening and closing premises as required.
  • Promote safe and healthy behaviour throughout the College.
  • Act as the first point of contact for any security incidents.
  • Provide written or electronic incident reports relating to breaches of security or health and safety.
  • Undertake security patrols and other routines within College premises as required.
  • Support staff and student identification checks.
  • Perform general porter duties, including moving furniture and equipment, and operating the distribution system for College goods.
  • Deploy bollards, barriers or tape to keep internal or external areas vehicle‑free as requested.
  • Change locks and arrange keys to be cut when required.
  • Turn off lights, appliances, or isolate electrical, gas or water systems when not in use to eliminate waste.
  • Monitor repair status of furniture, fixtures, fittings and report faults.
  • Undertake minor maintenance and first‑fix repairs such as painting, changing light fittings, fuses, plugs, taps and washers.
  • Drill holes, hang fixtures and fittings as required.
  • Monitor external contractors and alert management of any concerns.
  • Apply rock salt to external areas in adverse weather conditions.
  • Keep external areas and roadways clear of obstructions for emergency vehicle access.
  • Act as Fire Marshall and/or First Aider when required.
  • Support the “One College, One Mindset” initiative.
  • Assist with cross‑College activities such as enrolment, open evenings and recruitment events.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures and operate within service standards.
  • Adhere to organisational policies such as GDPR, Equality and Financial Regulations.
  • Carry out other duties within the framework of the role as required.
  • Adopt new technology in all aspects of job requirements.
  • Participate in professional development, in‑service training and the College appraisal scheme.

Essential Criteria Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Experience in a security, maintenance or caretaking role.
  • Completed formal security training or willingness to complete training.
  • Understanding of safe working practices in line with health and safety legislation.
  • Experience with alarm systems, CCTV and radios.
  • Ability to undertake minor repairs and first‑fix maintenance.
  • Basic understanding of heating and ventilation systems and controls.
  • Experience in a customer‑oriented environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of customer care procedures.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Minimum Level 2 literacy and numeracy or willingness to complete it.
  • Flexibility to work across all College premises and work a shift pattern as directed.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Inter‑personal skills to answer enquiries and deal with all customers in a friendly manner.
  • Understanding and commitment to College policies, particularly equality and diversity.
  • Ability to set high standards for students, colleagues and oneself.
  • Positive personality – self‑motivated.
  • Willingness to assist and interact with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt workload and priorities to meet unit demands.
  • Versatility in performing a variety of functions within a team with a positive approach to change.
  • Commitment to personal development.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential).

Desirable Criteria

  • Basic understanding of heating and ventilation systems and controls.
  • Understanding and awareness of an educational environment.
  • First‑aid and/or Fire Marshall training certificate.
  • Commitment to keep up to date with new and emerging technologies and resources, and horizon‑scanning to identify potential opportunities to enhance the service.
