The Bereavement Support Officer is a key role within Little Wings of Hope, providing compassionate, consistent, and high-quality emotional and practical support to families following baby loss. Acting as the first point of contact, the post holder will ensure families feel heard, known, and genuinely cared for throughout their journey with the charity. At Little Wings of Hope, we work hard to ensure that every family is individually recognised, remembered, and well supported. This role is central to maintaining and strengthening that commitment through meaningful relationships and personalised care.
The role combines direct bereavement support with service coordination, peer support facilitation, partnership working, and contribution to the ongoing development and expansion of Little Wings of Hope’s bereavement care services.
Family Support- Act as the first point of contact for bereaved families via phone, email, and digital platforms.
- Provide sensitive, empathetic emotional support tailored to each family’s needs.
- Build trusted relationships to ensure families are known to Little Wings of Hope and feel consistently supported.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records to support continuity of care.
- Be committed to supporting families through key milestone events such as anniversaries, birthdays, awareness weeks, and significant dates.
- Offer proactive and responsive support at times that may be particularly challenging for families.
- Ensure ongoing contact reflects Little Wings of Hope’s commitment to long‑term, relational support rather than one‑off interactions.
- Support families in accessing and arranging Little Wings of Hope bereavement breaks.
- Liaise with families before, during, and after their break to ensure a supportive and meaningful experience.
- Coordinate with internal teams and external providers to ensure smooth delivery of breaks.
- Support and help moderate Little Wings of Hope’s WhatsApp peer‑to‑peer support groups including Pregnancy After Loss group.
- Encourage safe, respectful, and supportive engagement within peer communities.
- Identify families who may require additional or specialist support and signpost appropriately.
- Contribute to the expansion and development of Little Wings of Hope’s bereavement care services.
- Share insights from family engagement to help shape and improve support offerings.
- Attend external third‑party events as required to promote Little Wings of Hope, build relationships, and support service growth.
- Work collaboratively with NHS trusts, healthcare professionals, and other charities to provide joined‑up support for families.
- Support families who take part in fundraising events, offering emotional support and understanding before, during, and after events where appropriate.
- Recognise the emotional impact fundraising may have on bereaved families and respond with sensitivity and care.
- Participate in team meetings, training, supervision, and reflective practice.
- Work within safeguarding, confidentiality, and data protection policies at all times.
- Escalate concerns appropriately and contribute to a supportive team culture.
- Undertake any other duties commensurate with the role and aligned with the values and mission of Little Wings of Hope.
- Experience of supporting individuals or families through grief, loss, or emotionally challenging situations (paid or voluntary).
- Strong listening and communication skills, with the ability to respond with empathy, sensitivity, and compassion.
- Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships over time, ensuring families feel known, remembered, and supported.
- Experience of providing support via phone, email, messaging platforms, or online communities.
- Confidence using digital tools such as WhatsApp, email, video calls, and online systems.
- Ability to maintain accurate, confidential records in line with GDPR and organisational policies.
- Highly organised with the ability to cope with demanding situations and work to tight deadlines.
- An understanding of and empathy with the issues surrounding the death of a baby, for professionals, parents and families.
- Calm and grounded when supporting people in distress.
- Deeply compassionate, non‑judgemental, and emotionally attuned.
- Strong understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality.
