Main Duties
- To contribute to a programme of activities that meet the individual needs and interests of children in your area in conjunction with other team members
- To keep records of your key children development and learning journeys and ensuring attachment theories are respected; share this with parents, carers and other key adults in the child’s life
- Engage in good team working
- Liaise with and support parents and other family members
- Attend out of working hours’ activities, e. g. training, monthly staff meetings, parents evening, fundraising events etc.
- Be flexible within working practices of the nursery; prepare snacks, meals, cleansing of equipment etc.
- Work alongside the Nursery Manager and staff team to ensure that the nursery’s philosophy is fulfilled
- Record accidents/Incidents in the accident book, ensuring the Nursery or Deputy Manager has signed the form before the parent receives it
- Look upon the nursery as a whole; determine where your help can be most utilised, constantly being aware of the individual needs of all children
- Ensure someone known and agreed by the nursery and parent collects the child
- Reflect on practice and daily routines, tailoring them to meet the individual needs of each child throughout the day
- Ensure new decisions are taken on board and maintained in the room at all times
- Ensure that all relevant handovers happen between rooms
- Read and understand all policies and procedures of the nursery and be able to answer relevant questions from parents/carers/outside agencies (i. e. OFSTED)
- Be reliable and punctual, maintaining staffing ratios at all times
- Ensure the students allocated to your room are aware of and comply with the policies and procedures of the setting
- Welcome all children and parents to the nursery and help them settle (irrespective of their rooms)
- Laying out and setting up the nursery and storing away equipment appropriately
- Explain activities to children and provide help if necessary
- Encourage the children with their language development and positive verbal response
- Organise creative activities and displays for the walls and help display the children’s work
- Maintain a clean and tidy nursery and garden area; ensure books, toys and equipment are clean and in good order
- Encourage and supervise clearing and tidy up time
- Provide a high standard of health and hygiene: change nappies and encourage children with toilet training and personal hygiene
- Help children at meal times and then tidy and clear away afterwards
- Have a sound knowledge of all the children in the setting and an excellent knowledge of your key children
- Fill in all the appropriate record keeping for your key child and ensure they are continually up to date
- Undertake training and give appropriate feedback to the staff team and implement this in your work
- Take responsibility for aspects of the work of the nursery as required by the management team
- Exercise a general duty of care for work colleagues and be responsible for ensuring a safe working environment for all
- Inform the management team of any concerns regarding the children, parents or other staff
- Ensure professionalism and confidentiality are adhered to at all times in accordance with the confidentiality policy
- Respect and value all colleagues, children and parents, encouraging a positive and diverse working environment
- Key Child Care Responsibilities
- To ensure a high standard of physical, emotional, social and intellectual care for children in the nursery
- To give support to other team members within the nursery
- To work as part of a team in order to provide an enabling environment in which all individual children can play, learn and develop
