Main duties of the job
- Responsible for managing a caseload and addressing a wide range of healthcare needs within a primary care setting.
- Work collaboratively with clinical and non‑clinical colleagues to ensure the highest standards of care for all registered patients.
- Actively contribute to practice planning and decision‑making processes.
- Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness.
- Be available for ‘on‑call’ duties to answer patients' telephone queries or carry out emergency home visits, or surgery consultations as appropriate.
- Carry out procedures in a safe manner by following best practice and infection control policies.
- Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients' needs.

Lister Medical Centre is based in Harlow, Essex. We are a well‑established, friendly teaching practice, and our dedicated team includes 8 GPs, 4 Emergency Care Practitioners, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 Nursing Associates, 2 Physician Associates, 4 HCAs and 17 admin/support staff. We have been providing a full range of GP services for over 30 years and have a patient list size of over 21,000 patients. As a teaching practice, we have Foundation Doctors and Students from Cambridge University based with us. We are situated in a purpose‑built health centre close to local amenities.
Job responsibilities
- Provide a point of contact for patients and act as a focal point of communication between patients, doctors and other medical staff.
- Make themselves available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, issuing and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.
- Make professionally autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self‑referred or referred internally within the Practice.
- Receive patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems and make assessment of their healthcare needs.
- Develop care plans for health consultation with patients and in line with current Practice disease management protocols.
- Provide counselling and health education.
- Prescribe in accordance with the Integrated Care Board (ICB) prescribing formulary whenever this is clinically appropriate.
- Admit or discharge patients to and from caseload and refer them to other care providers internally or externally as appropriate.
- Comply with relevant Practice policy/guidelines, e.g. Child Protection, confidentiality issues, etc.
- Maintain GMC registration and ensure continuous Medical Defence cover.
- Ensure inclusion on a local Performers list.
Other Responsibilities within the Practice
- Consult with patients in the surgery and at home visits as agreed internally between all partners.
- Contribute to the evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting with colleagues.
- Record clear and contemporaneous IT‑based consultation notes to agreed standards.
- Comply and issue computer‑generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding handwritten prescriptions whenever possible).
- Contribute to the strategic management and development of Practice e.g. in developing and contributing to Practice policies and guidelines.
- Attend training, Practice meetings and events organised by the Practice or other agencies, where appropriate.
- Meet all tight timescales/deadlines for audits and written returns to ensure that the Practice meets quality standards and receives the designated funding.
- Ensure full accreditation which will include full and unrestricted registration with the GMC, membership of an appropriate defence body and delivery of annual evidence for appraisal or accreditation purposes in keeping with National requirements at any time.
Infection Control
The post holder will be aware of the principles of preventing healthcare acquired infections by their practice of aseptic technique/clean as appropriate. The post holder will carry out procedures in a safe manner by following best practice and infection control policies. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining up to date knowledge of safe practice with regards to infection control.
