This is a great opportunity to come in and make a real difference to a major organisation, using your experience with Oracle 10gR2, SQL, stored procedures, working with SQL Embedded in Pro*COBOL code in an OpenVMS Environment. You will be joining the team to work on a mission critical migration project. To take this one you will need to have extensive experience of database upgrades, and OpenVMS architecture migrations, such as VAX to Alpha to Itanium is an advantage. The client's customer's solution uses the Oracle database and OpenVMS. The current versions of OpenVMS, Oracle and Oracle forms are out of date, as a result, a major project is underway to migrate the solution to OpenVMS on X86 with the database re-host on Linux. The experience required to thrive in this role includes being experienced in working on an OpenVMS development environment, both with Pro*COBOL and Oracle.
Responsibilities:
- Update Pro*Cobol/SQL/DCL code to support connecting to databases on a remote machine.
- Make code changes necessary to support the application running on OpenVMS X86 using a new Cobol pre-compiler.
- Code changes to support moving from the rule based to cost-based optimizer.
- Work with the VMS architecture and quality assurance functions to ensure the security, privacy and integrity of our customer's data and solutions, ensuring relevant accreditations are achieved.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Strong understanding of Oracle 10gR2 on OpenVMS.
- Understanding of working with Embedded SQL in Pro*COBOL code.
- Hands-on experience with applications written in SQL/Pro*COBOL.
- Experienced in working on an OpenVMS development environment.
- Strong understanding of DCL.
- Demonstrable hands-on experience with applications written in SQL.
- Experienced working within Agile delivery teams within a fast-paced environment, including being an active contributor as part of an Agile development team.
- Good understanding of Service Operations & ITIL responsibilities as applied to operating within both agile and non-agile environments.
- Diligent and positive about supporting fellow Engineers to track support tickets, system monitoring, security & auditing.
