Imagine providing the raw computational power that allows an astronomer to map a distant galaxy, a chemist to simulate a life saving drug, or a researcher to unlock the secrets of the human genome. Behind every world changing research project is a complex web of high performance computing, high speed networking, and resilient data centres. I'm looking for a Research Platforms Manager who ensures that infrastructure never skips a beat. This isn't your standard corporate IT "keep the lights on" job. You are the architect and the guardian of their Research Platforms Group.

You will lead a specialised team, manage a sophisticated network fabric, and steer the strategic direction of their compute services. You aren’t just managing servers; you are managing the pipeline of their innovation.

  • Strategic Growth: You’ll work closely with the Head of Research Platforms to decide where we go next.
  • Complex Infrastructure: From InfiniBand networks and Linux clusters to massive data centre operations, you own the stack.
  • Team Mentorship: You’ll oversee a Research Platforms Officer, fostering a culture of technical excellence and proactive problem solving.
  • Vendor & Stakeholder Mastery: You’ll be the bridge between global hardware vendors and world leading academic minds.

You’re a technical leader who thrives in the grey area between hardware engineering and systems administration. A Linux devotee who understands that research computing requires a different level of precision. You have a deep understanding of Networking and Virtualisation, you know how to move data fast and keep it secure. You are a Project Scoper. You can take a vague research requirement and turn it into a robust, scalable technical reality. You enjoy the "Big Picture" but aren't afraid to dive into the data centre when a complex troubleshoot is required. Sound interesting? Apply and let's have a chat!
