Main duties of the job

We are keen to expand our primary health-care team and are looking for an enthusiastic, forward-thinking professional Health Care Assistant to join the team. The ideal candidate would possess excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team. NVQ level 3 and Phlebotomy qualifications are essential.

We are the largest practice in Middlesbrough with 9 GP partners, 1 Nurse Practitioner, 4 Practice Nurses, 2 HCAs, 2 Phlebotomists and a superb group of highly committed and enthusiastic administrative and reception staff. We're situated close to the town centre with a list size of over 20,000 patients and operate from purpose-built premises in Linthorpe and a branch surgery situated in the North Ormesby Health Village. Linthorpe Surgery is a well-established training practice and regularly teaches university undergraduate students.

Job responsibilities:

  • Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need
  • Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education
  • Be an integral part of the general practice team
  • Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation
  • Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives
  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  • Provide support during minor operations as required
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy
  • Work within national and local protocols where these exist
  • Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children
  • Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred
  • Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements
  • Support the administrative team on an as-required basis
  • Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes
  • Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times
  • Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed

Person Specification

Experience:

  • Practical experience of working in a team
  • Experience of using own initiative
  • Understanding of infection prevention and control measures
  • Experience of working within a General Practice

Skills:

  • Time management and the ability to work to deadlines
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Understanding of the principles of ECGs
  • Ability to undertake patient medicals, including height, weight, BP, pulse and BMI
  • Understanding of safeguarding adults and children
  • Wound care, including removal of sutures and staples
  • Feno and spirometry testing

Qualifications:

  • Good standard of general education
  • Qualified to NVQ level 3
  • Qualified in Phlebotomy
