A large public-sector organisation in South Wales is seeking an experienced Accountancy Assistant to provide high-quality financial support within a busy service area. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with local authority, council, or housing association experience to join a well-established finance team on a long-term interim basis.
Assignment Details
- Contract Length: 12 months (ongoing assignment)
- Pay Rate: £18.57 per hour (Umbrella)
- Hours: 37 hours per week
- Working Pattern: Hybrid - 4 days working from home, 1 day per week onsite

The Role
Reporting to the Finance Business Partner, the Accountancy Assistant will provide financial and budgetary support to a key service group. The role focuses on final accounts, budget preparation, financial monitoring, and supporting public-sector reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with preparation of final accounts and annual estimates
- Support budget setting and ongoing budgetary control
- Produce and maintain monthly financial monitoring information
- Support forecasting of staffing and service expenditure
- Assist with grant claims, statutory returns, and financial data reporting
- Support monitoring of capital and minor works expenditure
- Assist with development and maintenance of financial systems
- Communicate financial information clearly to non-finance managers
Essential Criteria (strict requirement)
- Proven experience within a local authority, council, or housing association
- Minimum 5 GCSEs (A-C or equivalent), including English and Maths
- Studying towards or holding AAT (Foundation), CAT (Introductory), or NVQ Level 2 Accounting
- Practical experience of budgetary control and/or final accounts preparation
- Understanding of public-sector accounting principles
- Strong Excel and financial systems skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workload
