An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Environmental Health Officer to join a busy public sector Environmental Health service in North London. The successful candidate will provide technical and professional environmental health services, with the overall aim of protecting and improving the health, safety and wellbeing of residents, workers and visitors across the borough. This role will focus on complex Health & Safety investigations, Food Safety inspections, enforcement activity and providing professional advice to businesses, residents and key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Food Safety inspections across the borough
  • Investigate complex Health & Safety incidents and complaints
  • Use statutory powers to carry out enforcement action where required
  • Investigate food hygiene, public health, infectious disease, drainage, pest and refuse-related matters
  • Inspect premises and prepare reports, schedules of work and recommendations
  • Gather evidence in line with statutory guidelines and support legal proceedings where required
  • Provide advice and guidance to businesses, schools, residents and other stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate records, case notes and performance data
  • Support service improvements, technical projects and knowledge-sharing across the team
  • Keep up to date with relevant Environmental Health, Food Safety and Health & Safety legislation

Requirements - Essential

  • Must have previous experience working within a Local Authority, Council or Housing Association environment
  • Qualified Environmental Health Officer/Practitioner or relevant baseline hygiene qualification
  • Strong technical knowledge of Environmental Health legislation, including food, health & safety and public health
  • Proven frontline experience delivering official food controls within a local authority setting
  • Experience carrying out Food Safety inspections and investigations
  • Experience dealing with food complaints, infectious disease cases and enforcement matters
  • Ability to serve and assess compliance with notices
  • Strong report writing, communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage complex cases in line with legislation and guidance
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office and specialist case management systems
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a suitable vehicle
