Design Manager Manchester Office Working location ; Manchester Office / Various Sites Reports To: Senior Project Manager / Head of Design / Director of Construction Job description / Role Overview The Construction Design Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the design process of construction projects valued between £5 million and £10 million. You will work closely with the project team, clients, architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure the design is delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Your role will focus on design coordination, risk management, and ensuring seamless communication between all parties involved. Key Responsibilities Design Coordination & Management Lead the design development and management process across multiple construction projects. Work closely with architects, engineers, and the project team to ensure that design concepts align with project goals and client expectations. Oversee design drawings, specifications, and other documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulations. Act as the main point of contact for all design-related queries and issues throughout the project lifecycle. Manage the design approval process and ensure all necessary permits and approvals are obtained prior to construction commencement. Budget & Time Management Ensure design work is completed within the agreed budget and timeline. Provide advice and support to the project team on cost-effective design solutions. Monitor the progress of the design phase and ensure timely delivery of design milestones. Manage and mitigate risks associated with design changes, delays, or potential cost overruns. Stakeholder Engagement Engage with clients, consultants, contractors, and other key stakeholders to ensure design objectives and client requirements are clearly understood and met. Organise and attend design review meetings, providing feedback and solutions to any potential issues. Assist with the preparation of project reports and presentations for clients and senior management. Key Requirements Education & Qualifications Degree in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline. Chartered status (e.g., RIBA, ICE, CIOB) or working towards it is preferred. Experience Proven experience as a Design Manager or in a similar role within the construction industry, specifically managing projects valued between £5m – £10m. Experience working on a variety of project types. Strong understanding of design processes, project management techniques, and construction methods. Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple design teams and stakeholders. Risk Management Proactively identify potential design risks and recommend solutions or alternatives to minimise disruption during construction. Work with the project team to resolve conflicts between design and construction teams and find cost-effective solutions to any technical challenges .
