ECC Focused Registered Veterinary Nurse opportunity at Dick White Veterinary Specialists (DWR) in Newmarket, Cambridge. This role is ideal for a nurse who enjoys a fast-paced, referral environment and delivering high standards of nursing care to critically ill patients.

Our teams of vets, nurses, nursing assistants, and client care professionals work collaboratively to deliver exceptional surgical and medical care. We accept referrals across multiple disciplines including Anaesthesia, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Oncology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, and Soft Tissue Surgery. DWR offers comprehensive clinical and non-clinical training programmes with strong support for development and CPD.
The Role: As an ECC Focused RVN, you will be responsible for delivering a high standard of nursing care to emergency and critically ill patients. You will work within a well-equipped, purpose-built ICU and Emergency Room alongside ECC specialists and experienced nursing colleagues. Your duties include nursing hospitalised patients in ICU, performing urgent triage, and assisting with initial stabilisation in the emergency receiving area. This position offers the opportunity to utilise a wide range of advanced nursing skills, with limited client-facing responsibilities. The role suits a nurse motivated to develop knowledge in a referral setting. Previous referral experience is preferred, and a strong culture of teaching, learning, and professional development is actively encouraged.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide nursing care for hospitalised inpatients, including critical care and infectious patients
- Administer treatments and medications as prescribed by the MRCVS
- Perform triage and assist with emergency stabilisation
- Accurately calculate and administer medications, including CRIs
- Place and maintain intravenous, urinary, central venous, PICC lines, feeding tubes, and chest drains
- Monitor patients under sedation and anaesthesia, including recovery
- Provide pre- and post-operative nursing care
- Maintain accurate clinical and hospitalisation records, including invoicing
- Participate in ICU rounds, team meetings, and clinical briefings
- Assist with stock management and equipment maintenance
- Use and maintain diagnostic and sterilisation equipment in line with SOPs
- Support and mentor PCAs, SVNs, and colleagues as required
- Maintain high standards of hygiene and infection control
- Comply with Health & Safety requirements and DWR policies
- Undertake CPD and required in-house training
- Support other departments as required based on patient and business needs
Working Pattern:
This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week on a rota basis: 5 × 8-hour shifts, Monday to Friday, between 6:30am and 6:30pm; 1:4 weekend rota working in ICU/ER, with TOIL provided; Participation in the Bank Holiday rota is required.
Essential Requirements:
- Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN)
- Previous Emergency or ER veterinary nursing experience
- IT literate
- Highly organised with strong time management and multitasking skills
- Confident and effective communicator
Desirable Experience and Qualifications:
- Referral nursing experience
- ECC nursing experience
- Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Dip AVN ECC)
- Veterinary Technician Specialist qualification
