Full-time permanent position

Oxfordshire based when not travelling

Full training provided on specialist systems

A specialist rail technology business is looking for a hands-on Rail Survey Systems Technician to support the deployment, operation and maintenance of advanced survey systems across UK and international rail networks.

The work combines:

  • geospatial data capture
  • survey systems
  • field operations
  • troubleshooting
  • deployment logistics
  • customer-facing support
  • operational problem solving

You will be working with high-spec survey equipment including:

  • lidar scanners
  • camera systems
  • ground penetrating radar
  • positioning and timing systems
  • integrated mobile survey platforms

The role is less about pure surveying and more about becoming the person who understands how the systems work, how they are deployed and how to maintain consistent, high-quality data collection in live operational environments.

What stands out:

  • Highly varied field and systems work
  • Exposure to specialist rail and survey technology
  • International deployment opportunities
  • Hands-on ownership of equipment and systems
  • Combination of workshop, office and field-based environments
  • Opportunity to build highly niche technical expertise
  • Strong learning curve with long-term progression potential

The environment will suit someone who:

  • enjoys solving practical problems
  • likes working with equipment and integrated systems
  • is adaptable and operationally minded
  • prefers variety over routine
  • works well in demanding field environments
  • is naturally curious and hands-on

Strong transferable backgrounds could include:

  • utility surveying
  • GPR surveying
  • geomatics
  • geophysics
  • mobile mapping
  • field systems engineering
  • instrumentation or technical field service

Experience with electronics, sensor systems, data acquisition or survey technology would all be advantageous. Python or scripting knowledge would also be viewed positively, although not essential.

The business fully expects the successful person to grow into the role over time given the niche nature of the systems and environment.

Less suited to individuals looking for:

  • highly structured corporate environments
  • predictable day-to-day routines
  • predominantly office-based work
  • purely reporting or processing-led positions
