We are looking for an experienced and proactive Department Engineer to join our engineering team in Fort William. This position plays a key role in ensuring plant reliability, managing electrical maintenance, developing apprentices, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the business.As a maintenance leader, you will be responsible not only for delivering hands-on technical support but also for driving best practices in safety, training, compliance, and operational excellence. Key Responsibilities: Maintenance & Engineering Duties: Assist with installation and commissioning of new electrical systems. Support the Engineering team with long-term maintenance planning and new equipment installations. Lead and support engineering maintenance projects across the site. Ensure all written isolation procedures are followed, including multiple-point isolations for controlling hazardous energy. Leadership & Scheduling: Manage the trade and apprentice workforce in your area. Contribute to the development of the weekly maintenance schedule. Lead the delivery of the weekly schedule through the use of CMMS and area information centres. Provide coaching and training to ensure team competency and quality standards. Support the ongoing development and training of apprentices. Health, Safety, Environmental & Quality (HSEQ): Comply with and enforce all company policies and procedures. Ensure all departmental activities meet the required health, safety, and environmental standards. Give clear, safety-focused instructions and ensure adherence. Contribute to writing and reviewing HSEQ-related policies and procedures. Ensure that all accidents and incidents are thoroughly investigated, and corrective actions are implemented. Conduct other HSEQ-related activities as required by the business. Manage contractors to ensure compliance with HSEQ, cost, time, and quality expectations. Continuous Improvement & Reliability: Instil a reliability-focused culture within the maintenance function. Lead reliability improvement projects using Lean principles. Identify and act upon changes in engineering standards and legislation. Support and train team members in fault diagnosis and root cause analysis. Qualifications & Skills: Recognised qualification in Engineering (e.g., NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND). Strong experience in electrical/mechanical maintenance within a manufacturing, heavy industry, or similar environment. Solid understanding of motors, drives, control systems, and electrical schematics. Familiar with CMMS systems and planned maintenance practices. Knowledge of current HSEQ regulations and electrical isolation standards. Strong leadership, coaching, and communication skills.
