A Civil Engineer typically organises and/or undertakes civil engineering activities within multi-disciplinary teams, whilst potentially supporting and mentoring more junior engineers. The role involves responsibility for:

  • Undertaking strategic studies, feasibility work, outline and detailed designs for a wide variety of water utilities projects including water and wastewater treatment, conveyance and reservoir dam safety.
  • Producing calculations and reports to support those designs.
  • Working directly with clients to understand their needs and develop solutions to their problems.
  • Producing business cases and proposals to enable our clients to fund their projects.
  • Working with our construction partners to improve safety of designs and understand and improve the construction process.
  • Ensuring our designs take account of buildability, sustainability, health & safety and environmental requirements.

About You:

  • Approaching or at Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or another relevant institution.
  • Previous experience in the water sector is not essential; we would look for technical skills transferrable to a civil engineering role in the water sector.
  • Desire to support and mentor more junior engineers towards achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Self-motivated and effective team player.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems and applicable engineering codes and standards.
  • Preparing calculations and developing civil engineering deliverables (models, drawings and reports) whilst adhering to project budgets, schedules and quality systems.
  • Providing guidance to others and supporting continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with internal and external team members on complex projects.
  • Prepare a variety of complex civil engineering deliverables for large or multiple projects.
  • Develop recommendations for materials and construction techniques.
  • Develop specifications for the identification, collection and management of data for engineering work.
  • Serve as a technical specialist and use knowledge and skill set to provide advice and guidance to project teams.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff.
  • Be fully conversant and comply with all aspects of health & safety duties of Designers.

Person Specification:

  • Civil Engineering Design and/or Hydraulics/Structural background.
  • Experience in design and build.
  • Knowledge & Experience in the design and checking of non-infrastructure water/wastewater treatment works design.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team of civil engineers and associated specialists (structural, geotechnical and hydraulics) and to interface with other disciplines in the production of engineering deliverables.
