In this role, The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) plays a vital role in supporting and developing Armstrong's supply chain to achieve world-class performance. Responsible for auditing, verifying, and qualifying new and existing suppliers, the SQE ensures compliance with relevant industry and regulatory standards, while driving continuous improvement across supplier operations.

Key Accountabilities
  • Supplier Qualification and Auditing
    • Lead and execute supplier audits (initial, process, and surveillance) to verify compliance with Armstrong's quality, safety, and delivery requirements.
    • Conduct detailed assessments based on ISO 9001, ISO 3834, and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
    • Qualify and onboard new suppliers through structured screening and capability assessments.
    • Monitor supplier approvals, certifications, and performance against contractual and regulatory obligations.
  • Supplier Development and Performance Management
    • Identify opportunities to improve supplier quality, delivery, and process capability.
    • Drive and support root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions (8D), and performance recovery plans.
    • Collaborate closely with Procurement, Engineering, and Production teams to align supplier capabilities with Armstrong's product and manufacturing needs.
    • Maintain and communicate supplier quality metrics, scorecards, and risk profiles.
  • Technical Quality Support
    • Review supplier documentation including weld procedures, inspection reports, material certificates, and quality plans.
    • Support the introduction and validation of new or modified components or subassemblies from suppliers.
    • Participate in PPAP, FAIR, or equivalent product validation and approval processes.
    • Ensure compliance with pressure vessel and safety regulations relevant to supplied components.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Promote best practices in lean manufacturing, process control, defect reduction, and first-time-right culture among suppliers.
    • Contribute to cross-functional quality and improvement projects related to cost reduction, risk mitigation, or product launch readiness.
What We’re Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing engineering, Quality Engineering or Management, or a related field.
  • Significant experience as a Supplier Quality Engineer within a manufacturing, HVAC, or engineered products environment.
  • Strong auditing skills with demonstrable knowledge of: ISO 9001, ISO 3834 (welding quality requirements), Pressure Equipment Directive (PED).
  • Technical knowledge of fabrication, welding, CNC machining, assembly, and related quality inspection techniques.
  • Full UK Drivers Licence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
  • Willingness to travel to supplier sites in the UK and occasionally in Europe – approximately 60% travel requirement.
  • Formal qualifications in Engineering, Metallurgy, or Manufacturing Technology.
  • Certified Lead Auditor or Internal Auditor (e.g. IRCA certified).
  • Knowledge of materials (e.g. carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, copper) and their processing in industrial products.
  • Experience using APQP, PPAP, 8D, FMEA, or other structured quality tools.
