Hartmann Young have partnered with an innovative biotechnology company in the East Anglia region of the UK, who are expanding their engineering team with the addition of a Principal Mechanical Engineer. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving mechanical design and product development across both new and existing platforms, taking products from concept through to manufacturing within accelerated development timelines. This position offers the opportunity to join at a critical stage of growth, working closely with senior leadership and influencing the future direction of multiple products across the portfolio.
Role:
- Lead mechanical design and product development activities across multiple diagnostic platforms
- Take ownership of the full product development lifecycle, including transfer to manufacturing
- Create and develop detailed CAD models and assemblies using SolidWorks
- Drive rapid design iteration and practical engineering problem solving in a fast-paced environment
- Work closely with manufacturing partners and suppliers to ensure robust design for manufacture (DFM)
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering and manufacturing teams to deliver projects to tight timelines
- Identify risks early, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement effective engineering solutions
- Contribute to regulated product development documentation aligned to ISO standards
- Act as a key support to the Engineering Director, with the ability to provide leadership coverage when required
- Support both brand-new product development programmes and enhancement and optimisation of existing products and platforms
Person:
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Proven experience in mechanical design and product development within medical devices, diagnostics, or another regulated industry
- Strong proficiency in SolidWorks / CAD
- Experience managing products through the full development lifecycle
- Familiarity with ISO product development processes
- Exposure to IVDR or similar regulatory frameworks would be advantageous
- Comfortable balancing hands-on engineering work with leadership and stakeholder interaction
