The Financial Controller will lead the financial operations of the business, ensuring accurate reporting, strong financial controls, and effective support for commercial decision‑making. Working closely with senior leadership, this role oversees budgeting, forecasting, compliance, and financial performance across all waste management activities, including collections, recycling, treatment, and disposal services.
Key Responsibilities- Oversee all day‑to‑day finance operations, including ledgers, cashflow, and month‑end processes.
- Produce accurate monthly management accounts, KPI reports, and variance analysis.
- Lead annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting cycles.
- Ensure robust financial controls, reconciliations, and audit readiness.
- Provide financial insight to operational teams across collections, recycling, transport, and disposal.
- Support pricing decisions, tender submissions, and contract renewals.
- Identify opportunities to improve margins, reduce waste‑handling costs, and optimise fleet expenditure.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations, tax requirements, and company policies.
- Manage external audits, statutory accounts, and liaison with auditors.
- Oversee payroll, VAT returns, and other statutory filings.
- Maintain strong internal controls and risk‑management processes.
- Lead and develop the finance team, ensuring high performance and continuous improvement.
- Implement process improvements, automation, and system enhancements.
- Work closely with the Managing Director and senior leadership team to support strategic planning.
- Proven experience as a Financial Controller or Senior Finance Manager.
- Strong background in operational or service‑based industries (waste management, logistics, construction, or similar).
- Excellent understanding of management accounting, financial controls, and cashflow management.
- Strong commercial awareness with the ability to analyse operational performance.
- Advanced Excel and financial systems skills.
- Experience in waste management, recycling, environmental services, or transport‑heavy businesses.
- Knowledge of fleet costing, contract pricing, and operational KPIs.
- Experience implementing new finance systems or process improvements.
- Analytical, detail‑focused, and highly organised.
- Strong communicator able to work with both finance and operational teams.
