Freelance Quantity Surveyor – Heavy Civils

The Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Freelance Quantity Surveyor to support a heavy civils scheme based in York. The project primarily involves pipeline installation and manhole construction, forming part of a wider infrastructure programme. This is an excellent opportunity for a QS with strong civils experience to join a well-established team and play a key role in the commercial management of the project.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee all commercial aspects of the project
  • Measurement and valuation of works (primarily pipelines and manholes)
  • Subcontractor procurement, administration, and payments
  • Preparation of applications for payment and final accounts
  • Cost forecasting, reporting, and budget control
  • Identification and management of variations and change events
  • Liaising with site teams, engineers, and project stakeholders
  • Ensuring contractual compliance and risk management

Requirements

  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor within heavy civils projects
  • Strong background in pipelines, drainage, and manhole construction
  • Good understanding of NEC contracts (preferred)
  • Ability to manage subcontractors and commercial processes independently
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and negotiation skills
  • Proficient in relevant commercial and reporting software
  • Available to start at short notice (preferred)
